THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

President’s message ….

Charity Dinner
What a fantastic evening we had at the Charity Dinner - the auction brought an amazing outcome.  A final tally of funds raised through the auction alone has not been done yet but a provisional announcement can be made in that we made over $20,000.  People were very generous and on most occasions the final bid was well over the value of the item.  The auctioneer John Price was both entertaining and professional in his delivery. The final item – which was a surprise to us all – was a “spin” around Hampton Downs Race Track with Greg Murphy. This lap lasts about 1’2”!!! – He said he would actually do about 4 laps.  In the end two bidders at $3,000 each will have this experience.  A most generous offer from our guest speaker.

The evening was ably co-ordinated by MC John Bullick, and Greg Murphy captured the attention of us all with his stimulating and informative address followed by questions.

Julie Chapman, Founder of Pet Refuge NZ Charitable Trust told us about the facility being built to provide temporary accommodation for pets allowing their owners to leave and get settled. We were sobered by the statistics relating to the victims of domestic violence and how they continue to suffer over an extended period as they do not want to leave behind their pets who are also victims of abuse. A  “tear-jerking” video was shown based on a true story of abuse and how it affects the victims – both human and animal.

I would like to extend a sincere and grateful thanks to all who worked so hard to ensure the Charity Dinner was a success – particularly the project team – Laurie Graham (lead), David Partis, Robyn Crickett and Dennis Finn.  Our thanks also goes to the sponsors and donors and all those who purchased tickets.

More pics soon but one as a starter.

Wood cutting Working Bee – John Bishop’s
A hard working team of Rotarians went to John Bishop’s to cut up timber for firewood.  He said this would keep him warm for the whole winter.  John is looking well but still has to take things at an easy pace.  Thank you to Ken Leatham for organizing this and those who volunteered their Saturday morning.  Also to Bev Heron for delicious scones and savouries.

Urban Miners Collection
Have just come back from the Urban Miners collection at CHS.  This was a great success with the caged trailer packed high to the top and Ted Mason’s pick up truck also full.  The best collection yet.  Survey outcomes from the public today revealed that most people heard about the collection via newspaper advertisement, followed by the signage and Facebook. Well done to David Blewden and the team for their hard work and volunteer time – thank you.

Next week’s meeting – Club Forum
We have our Club Forum next week and another opportunity for fellowship and answer questions of our Directors. Look forward to seeing a great attendance.

Meeting Notes – 15 April 2021
At Thursdays meeting Acting Sergeant Ian Grant called the meeting to order after raising the rostrum but not lowering the tone. He provided details of This Week in History – including an unusual juxtaposition of condoms and wax dummies – before formally introducing President Bev.
“My shoes got soaked in yesterday’s storm” said President Bev but, undeterred,  then welcomed our guests, Mayor Jim Mylchreest and Mayoress Robyn. She mentioned ongoing projects and confirmed that Bill Robinson had been nominated for District Governor. In wishing him well, President Bev reminded us that he will need our continuing support.
Andrew Bateman introduced our Guest Speaker who is no stranger to us and thanked the Mayor for his continuing support.
In “the biggest shakeup for the last 30 years”, Mayor Jim Mylchreest prefaced the next 10 years in 10 points. He touched on a host of subjects including water reforms, Covid and the supply chain, debt levels, connected communities, housing, climate change, cycle and walkways, sporting facilities, infrastructure and future zoning. He indicated that social, cultural, environmental and economic programmes had to be integrated – and paid for. The main issues for the Council  over the next 10 years are a Cycleway from TA to Nga Roto; Urban Mobility; Lake Te Koo Utu; TA Memorial Park; a Resource Recovery Centre. Excluded are a Third Bridge; Food Waste Collection; Cemetery Space; Library Facilities; Residential & Commercial Growth Cells. These are all important but not urgent issues.
A fuller report of the Mayor’s talk will be available on our website shortly.

Responding to a question the Mayor said that the water reform would be extensive and costly for anyone providing water for others. “It may not be good value for money” he added.
After ably answering a few more questions, the Mayor was thanked by Bill Wilson and applauded by the 36 members present.

President Bev noted that the 10-Year Plan adopted by the Council means a lot of hard work by councillors and by council staff.

NOTICES

Charity Dinner
Bev Heron reminded Charity Dinner goers that payment should be made and told us that approximately 200 meals would be served.

Adventure Club; Guess Who’s coming to Dinner; Urban Miners – David Blewden
  • Only 7 places left for the Pinnacles Walk.
  • Final call for the Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Project.
  • Thanks to those who provided 1 litre bottles.
  • Twenty two intrepid explores tackled the Timber Trail in the Pureora Forest last Sunday.
Ranging in age from 9 to a spritely 85 and on a varied selection of bikes ranging from the latest e-bikes to hard-core mountain bikes, the group enjoyed great scenery and light-hearted comradery along the way.
Drizzle accompanied the start of the ride, making the bush glisten and shine in the mid-morning sun.  By lunchtime, and true to the forecast, the sun came out for a dry and warm second half.
Tour Leader and Camp Farther are delighted to report that all completed the 44km ride without major incident, although Tour Leader did get a bit discombobulated by Ted Mason’s flared nostrils snorting, from behind into his right ear as he tried to force the pace of the lead group.  He later reported that is was all very reminiscent of a recent dual sulky ride when the horse behind had also sounded suspiciously like Ted on the charge!  The day concluded with the team re-hydrating and fuelling up at the Railway Café in Te Kuiti.
New Members – John Bullick
Very soon now – 6 May 2021. Only 7 names recorded so far. Please provide more names asap.

FirewoodSplitting Working Bee; Chain Saw & Firewood Raffle – Ken Leatham
A Firewood Cutting Working Bee at John Bishop’s (Sat.17 April)
Other working bees at the Te Miro property to be arranged.
The DEADLINE for the return of tickets and payment of monies is THURSDAY 22 APRIL 2021. Ken didn’t say that any member not returning both would be charged with the total cost!! – but why take a chance?

Blood Bank
The one more volunteer needed for 28 April 2021 was found in Ken Leatham.

Conference and District Leadership Seminar – Ian Grant
Conference Registration closes soon.
District Leadership Seminar for incoming officers on 8 May 2021.

The raflles were drawn by the Mayor and the winners donated, at the Sergeant’s request, their bottles to be prizes at the Charity Dinner.

CHS Dinner Catering
After dinner, President Bev thanked the Volleyball team from the School for providing an excellent meal and waiting on us. Molly Harvey, the Volleyball Team Leader, responded and it was noted that $800.00 had been raised for the Team’s funds.

Acting Sergeant Ian warned that his fines would be ”fast and furious”. They were!

Presidemt Bev closed the meeting by thanking the Charity Dinner donors and supporters and also the Mayor and Mayoress, wishing them well for a great year.
