President’s message …. The week leading up to our last meeting was full of activity with the Pink Ribbon Appeal day, completion of the bus shelter with the Rotary logo and a school collection by the Materials Recovery team (those involved are doing a great job – they are well-organised and have their health and safety procedures including COVID tracing well in place. Thanks to all those who have been involved in these events/projects. Also good to see a couple of articles in the local newspaper and a nice big ad for the upcoming Bookarama – we need all hands to the deck please to help during the week – please contact Ray Milner if you have questions.
A good turnout at the meeting on Thursday and a huge thank you to David Partis for stepping in at short notice to be our guest speaker. Also a thank you to Roger Hill for presenting a very interesting “Did you know…” topic. Nice to see prospective member Margaret Nicholson at a second meeting.
Charity Dinner 16 April 2021: On Thursday, Laurie Graham announced the date of the dinner and the charity of choice which is the Pet Refuge New Zealand Charitable Trust. Laurie who is the project lead, Robyn Crickett, David Partis and I met with the Pet Refuge Marketing Co-ordinator this week to learn more about their work.
Some information we learnt:
Pet Refuge is a national charity that will help families and their pets/farm animals escape abuse
Pet Refuge will help victims of abuse to escape their abuser much sooner by providing a safe, temporary place for their pets to stay
Pet Refuge will partner with Women’s Refuge, Shine and the New Zealand Police, taking care of pets via referrals
The Pet Refuge is currently being built and will open in 2021 once construction is completed
Pets will be kept safe when a woman goes into a refuge, giving space and time needed to make arrangements for a future without violence for themselves and their pets
The shelter will house up to 24 dogs, 35 cats and 30 birds and small animals at any one time.
A national network of safe farms to care for larger farm animals is being established
Pet Refuge will assist with sourcing a speaker/s on the night of the dinner, selling tickets and providing auction items.
As a club, let’s all get behind the Charity Dinner and this very worthy cause that will help victims of domestic violence leave their abusive relationship and keep their pets safe. For more information see Laurie or go to the website www.petrefuge.org.nz
Remember too – we have currently been curtailed in our fundraising activities due to COVID-19 so let’s make this project a real winner to boost our dollars.
Meeting Notes: 5 November 2020
David Partis shared the wonderful tale of his grandfather’s exploits in the merchant navy at Zeebrugge canal on 22 and 23 April, 1918 during WW1, and his own pilgrimage to the site on the 100 year anniversary of those events.
Grandfather Partis had been aboard the vessel “Intrepid” that was a part of the fleet of 4 that were to be scuttled at the entrance to the canal in an attempt to curtail the activities of the German U boat fleet.
David inherited his grandfather’s ring (inscribed “Laura to Fred 1918” on the passing of his father. Research into the ring and his grandfather’s service records led David and Suzanne to Zeebrugge on 22 April 2018 to coincide with the 100 year celebrations of the event.
Andrew Bateman thanked David for sharing his heart-warming anecdotes.
The raffle was won by Greg Gascoigne and Gav Levesque, and Acting Sergeant Chris Crickett was ruthless in his fine session.
The Bookarama duty roster sheets still have vacancies – the sheets will be at the Town Hall – all helpers welcome.
Col Davis and team will start assembling tables in the Town Hall from noon on Sunday, in readiness for the book deliveries from Achievement House that will commence around 1.45. Volunteers for the setting up of books should be at the Town Hall at 1.45 pm.
The Achievement House Christmas Party will be held on 3 December, and Roger Hill called for volunteers to canvas local restaurants/caterers for sponsorship of food for the event.
Street marshals are required for the Christmas Parade from 12 noon to 3.00 pm on 6 December – Bill Robinson is organising the roster.
Laurie Graham gave advance notice of the Charity Dinner planned for 16 April 2021. Pet Refuge will be the beneficiary of the evening.
Did you Know....?
Roger Hill outlined how grapes tainted by the smoke from the Californian bush fires had come to be tested here in Cambridge.
President Bev closed the meeting early at 7.40 pm.
Volunteers to approach food sponsors for the Achievement House Xmas party on Thursday, 3rd December:
Volunteers were called for at last week's club meeting to approach 24 local cafes and food outlets, to see if they are willing to support this function again this year. If so, we will then need to pick up the food from them on the day, and return any platters that need returning. In order to spread the workload, each volunteer will need only be responsible for 3 businesses, i.e. 8 volunteers are needed. We still require another 3 people.
If you can help, please let Roger Hill or Bill Wilson know. We need to start this process within the next week or so.
Please take note of the Duty Roster and be in good time for your duties.
If you are unable to attend on the date you are rostered, please swap or arrange a substitute. Please also advise the President and Sargent of the change.
Please Text Apologies and extras including names and the related date to 021 0267 8742 (or phone) or email rotarycambridgenz@gmail.comBY end of day ON Tuesday
To send apologies or extras, do not press reply from this bulletin email
