Rotary Walk with Us end polio walk runs from 1-31 October. You will be able to register your target of whatever distance suits and get friends, family, colleagues etc to sponsor you.
Although now a distant memory in most countries polio was rampant before vaccines were developed in the 1950s. There are still two countries where the virus continues to persist. So let's get behind these initiatives and help raise funds to support the End Polio Now project.
Meeting Notes:
24 members attended the ZOOM Meeting held at 5.30 p.m. on 10 September
It was the Crickett Show – Acting Sergeant Chris introduced PP Robyn, and then gave a “today in history” summary.
John Tarbutt introduced Vivian Edgar from the Rotary Club of Papamoa, District YEP Inbound co-ordinator. Vivian gave the background to the Programme, its operation and the positive outcomes for all involved – the students, their hosts, the participating Rotary Clubs and their members – to quote her: “Promoting peace one student at a time”.
She outlined the impact that COVID 19 has had on the programme, both globally and locally, with just 3 South American students still in the District, and three outbound students (including the two from our Club) still overseas – all others have returned home. Looking ahead, the programme will be governed by the pandemic, with the new RI protocols for future exchanges adding further complications for District and the Clubs.
No inbound students were accepted from the northern hemisphere in July 2020, and none will be accepted from southern hemisphere countries in January 2021.Despite this uncertainty, Vivian encouraged the Club continue with its plans for outbound YEP plans for 2022.
Acting Sergeant Chris thanked Vivian for her comprehensive presentation.
LesleyAnn Thomas then introduced Bill Robinson, and Bill’s topic was one near and dear to him: RYLA
Bill spoke to a presentation that he had recently given to District officers in Taupo, outlining the aims of the programme in fostering and developing leadership qualities in 20 - 26 year old up-and-coming individuals.
Jan Bilton: We will be joined by the Rotary Club of East Hamilton for the tour of the glass works on 29 October..
Ray Milner The Lions have cancelled the Trash and Treasure Markets this Sunday, so no stall.
Guess who’s coming to dinner” is still under consideration – watch this space.
Next week: Likely to be a Zoom meeting
Past President Robyn thanked members and guests for their attendance, and closed the meeting early at 6.30 pm.
John Bullick The School Speech contest at Cambridge East school hall next Wednesday, 6pm, 16 September needs to be managed under Alert Level 2 conditions.
Therefore to ensure a gathering of less than 100 people, would you please let me know if you will be attending the event.
There is room for a number of Rotary members to attend, so don't be put off-I just need to ensure numbers are managed. No supper is to be provided, so there will be no kitchen helpers needed as in past years.
