From President John
Congratulations to John Bullick and the team who organised the annual speech contest. The two awardees who addressed us Thursday evening were splendid and confirms the value of this segment of our community youth programme.
A big thank you to the club for an impressive turnout across the garden festival. Not even the weather could dampen the enthusiasm of gardeners, stall holders and ticketed visitors from around the upper north island. Carey reported net income will be north of $40,000, helping us back on track to fill the Cambridge Rotary grants contributions that have been battered by Covid in the past couple of years.
Last night the Bruised Brothers and several other Cambridge Rotarians supported and were part of the organising committee for Resthaven celebration of 50 years. Cambridge Rotary were a founding member of this not-for-profit community asset for aged care.
This coming week 1 December 2022 is our Christmas Party and final meeting for the year - see notice below.
Award Recipient - Nathalie Roy Rotary Scholarship Award
The Cambridge Rotary Club sponsors a prize for Cambridge High School's senior prizegiving. This year Gemma Barham received the Nathalie Roy Rotary Scholarship Award for an All-Round Year 13 student who has been an ambassador for the school and fully involved in school life.
Congratulations to Gemma for this well deserved award.
2022 Rotary Primary School Speech Competition
This week we were privileged to hear presentations by the winner and runner up from the 2022 Rotary Primary School Speech Competition. Trophy winner, Ellie Harfoot, a Year 8 student from Hautapu School, spoke on "The language of our bodies can change our lives". Runner Up, Sienna Long, Year 7 from Cambridge Middle School, presented a speech entitled "Spend it wisely". Both presentations were excellent and members were very impressed with the confidence and speaking ability of both girls.
Garden Festival
This event raised close to $50,000 so a great effort by everyone involved. A survey has been distributed to gather ideas to make it even better and very positive feedback has been received.
Suggestions include more toilets, better parking and holding the event over two days instead of one. People visited, on average, eight gardens and many have commented on the friendly welcome they received.
Rotary Christmas Party
A reminder that our Rotary Christmas Party is booked for Thursday 1 December at Ross Bros, C&R Developments, Classic Car Museum, Hannon Road, Hautapu at 5.30 pm. Meal will be a seated buffet at 6.30 pm.
Please BYO your own refreshments and glassware. No need to bring a present.
Look forward to seeing you all there!
Rotary Youth
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2023
We are seeking suitable applicants for RYLA 2023. The programme is open to participants aged 20 – 26 years and runs from 15th to 20th April. It is to develop leadership skills and build support networks for focussed and enthusiastic young leaders. The Board has resolved to support up to 2 participants. If you know of any suitable people please contact Don Wilson on the link below.
Rotary Youth Exchange
Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) provides senior secondary school students with an opportunity to participate in family, cultural and community life in another country over a twelve-month period while attending a secondary school in that country. Each year a group of inbound students are hosted in Rotary clubs of D9930 and a similar number of outbound students are selected by D9930 Rotary clubs and the District committee for a year overseas.
We have been asked whether our Club would host a student next year. We would need 3-4 host families to share the hosting, not necessarily Rotary families.
We also want to identify any suitable Kiwi student to participate. We need to complete interviews before 31 March. For more information contact Don Wilson.
The Adventure Club is planning to have the above activity for club members and friends on Sunday 5 February 2023. Having done this ride a number of times, it is an enjoyable and scenic ride. Going through the tunnel is a highlight.
The plan is to meet at the Karangahake Hall carpark, and ride on the Hauraki Rail Trail through to Waihi and return-approximately 35 km total, 2-2.5 hours. A morning tea stop at the Waikino Station cafe might be in order, and a late lunch in Paeroa on the way home. See link below for more details.
For walkers, the Windows Walk is a great short walk that comes well recommended. This begins a short distance from the Karangahake Hall carpark and is a 2.5 km loop that takes around 1 hour to complete. Currently this walk is closed as a result of the wet weather.
Please email John Bullick on johnbull@xtra.co.nzif you are interested in participating in either the bike ride or walk.
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner on Friday night went very well and many thanks to Rollo Webb for leading the organisation of this social gathering.

Urban Miners Christmas Party is on Tuesday 13 December at Arnold Street from 4.00pm for an informal end-of-year get together. If you haven't already RSVP'd please contact Anne Blewden for catering purposes by clicking here.
