Bulletin notes – Club meeting 14 March 2019
President Ray welcomed everyone especially Paul Stephens and Shona Devoy returning from leave of absence.
Rotary Materials Recovery – potential project
Rotary’s Mark Hanlon and David Blewden were the speakers for the evening providing information on a potential new project – Rotary Materials Recovery. This was a project aimed to protect the environment for the future and to raise funds for Rotary and other community groups with whom the Club may partner. The Board had approved Mark and David to undertake early research and this had been done over the last few months. As part of their research a visit was made to the GOME Trust in Whanganui that already was operating a similar project with considerable success. The current vision was that Rotary would initiate and organise the project with the hands on work being done by community groups. The value to the groups would be from the metals extracted from the discarded items. A collection service of would not be offered but the public would be required to drop these off at a collection point.
Discussions had been held with the Waste Minimisation unit of Waipa District Council who had been supportive in principle. Visits had also occurred to waste companies throughout the region. David had attended a Waste Minimisation course in Auckland for which the Waipa Council had paid.
Further research was required and Mark and David would be pleased if two or three other club members could join them. Part of the work to be done was to look for a suitable site which was local and secure so anyone with expertise in this area would be welcomed. Research was required, but not limited to the following:
- legal structure
- physical removal of the metals and what is recycled
- hours of operation
- security
- health and safety
- insurance including public liability
- charges, costs and revenue
Club members asked a range of questions and were enthusiastic in principle to the project and supported the continued research including the development of a feasibility study and business case.
President Ray wrapped up the presentation by inviting Club members who were interested in being part of the 3-4 month research and visits which would include the matters noted above to see Mark or David.

Waipa Fun Run – President Ray thanked all those who had helped with marshalling.
Correction: Last week’s bulletin noted the members of the Garden Festival Project Committee. Denis White should have been listed and not Dennis Finn. Thank you Denis. Apologies from the meeting recorder BM-R.
As I write the above, I am shocked and saddened by the happenings in Christchurch this afternoon, and reflect on the four way test which we all adhere to. Let’s stand by this:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
