Last Week’s Presenters

Sadly Isobel had an accident at school so she wasn’t able to deliver her winning speech to us last week. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Marie Davis gave us a short presentation on Altrusa and it’s so great to hear about other service clubs in our community. Some quick facts on Altrusa

It was started in Nashville, 100 years ago
The name comes from altruism and USA
Here in New Zealand, Altrusa started in Auckland, in 1966
In 1977 literacy was adopted as a project and over the years many awards have been earned for their work in literacy
Here in Cambridge, Altrusa supports:
- Cambridge High School with their awards
- Tactile books for the blind
- A $2,000 scholarship for tertiary or specialist education
- Two years ago a fabric fair was held to raise funds for Vanuatu and 10 sewing machines and kits have been donated to Vanuatu
- Ongoing or about to get underway projects include weekly transport for the residents of St Andrews, and Magic Moms (supporting moms with special needs children)
And how can we help Altrusa? They need new members so if you know of anyone who might be the perfect match for Altrusa, send them down to the table at Trash & Treasure (outside the BNZ bank) to find out more

Friendship Exchanges

And thanks to Bill Wilson for giving us an insight into Rotary Friendship Exchanges- the bottom line and key message from Bill is to get yourself on one of these and have a fabulous time, build new friendships and explore the world.

Coming Up On Thursday – John Tarbutt

This week will be a treat for us as we get to hear about John’s work in the islands. We haven’t heard from John since 2009 and he’s recently been away on a trip to magical work with eyesight missions so I’m sure we will be get to hear some wonderful stories.

Vacancy

Elaine’s work commitments means that she has had to step down as the Bulletin Editor so we’ve got a vacancy for this club role – please get in contact with Ray, Robyn or any one of the board members if you’re interested.

Taste Waikato

The wonderful Taste Waikato is out and we need your help to sell it. The more you can get out and sell, the more funds we can raise to good in our community.

Key Updates

Lots is going on and November is going to be a busy month so buckle up, get your diaries going and get stuck in doing what we all joined Rotary for – doing good in our community whilst building our networks and friendships.

Thursday 8 November – we won’t be at Resthaven because we’re off to Hills Laboratories for a workplace visit with dinner being hosted by Roger’s team
And the following week on the 15^th we’re off to see Blackadder Goes Forth at The Gaslight Theatre. Tickets are $60 which includes the show and a meal and there are 47 tickets available/ RSVPs are needed by the 1^st of November so talk to Chris or Robyn Crickett
Bill Robinson is looking for volunteers for Armistice (10 & 11 November)– this year is the 100 year celebrations so it’s bound to be a magnificent year. If you didn’t sign up on Thursday night please make sure you do over the next week or so
Garden Festival Tickets - another great update from Carey. The festival date (18 November) is fast approaching, so please promote, promote, promote - Ticket sales via website (https://www.cgf.nz/), Amber Nurseries and Cambridge jewellers
- There’s a Shelter Box fundraiser on the 29^th of November at the Novotel – get in touch with Ray if you want to find out more
- Date to be confirmed – Polio Plus fundraiser at Tivoli Cinema with a great movie on show, Bohemian Rhapsody

SHINE FOR SHELTERBOX

A ShelterBox Fundraising Dinner ShelterBox is a cutting-edge charity that hand-delivers emergency relief aid.

Our signature ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits contain all the tools to transform lives and rebuild communities, by providing shelter for families devastated by natural disaster and conflict.

On Thursday 29th November, at 6.45 for 7.00pm the Novotel Hotel in Hamilton will host a beautiful candlelit fundraising "Shine for ShelterBox" dinner.The guest speaker will be ReliefAid CEO Mike Seawright, who will talk about his organisations partnership with ShelterBox, and his work in armed conflict zones around the world. ShelterBox Response Team members will also talk about their recent deployments to Kenya and the Philippines.Shine for ShelterBox is a wonderful campaign that will raise money to support those in urgent need in disaster zones around the world. This season it’s all about people coming together to brighten lives and help spread a little light to others when they most need it the most. As you dine, you will be raising money to provide light and emergency shelter for families in great need.Tickets are $75pp, which includes a buffet dinner with dessert, tea/coffee, and a donation to ShelterBox.
