Mandy and Terry owners and developers of Te Awa hosted the club on a visit. Welcomed with a complimentary glass of champagne or beer we assembled in the community hall to hear a little about their thirty year experience in the retirement village business and their plans for Te Awa.
It was important to them that they show their commitment to their clients early hence many of the community facilities were completed before any residents moved in. The village caters for people aged 70 or above and ranges from fully independent living in villas through to a small hospital and dementia care unit.
Mandy paid tribute to their staff which include nurses a chef, domestic staff and gardeners. She also mentioned some of the challenges from having to protect bat trees to finding a Maori adze and preserving a pa site in addition to the restoration of the origin house on the site at a cost of about $500k.
After dinner supplied by their chef Mark the group split into two and visited many of the facilities including an almost complete villa.
