What an inspirational speaker Miriam Ellis from Cy-Co Coffee Company proved to be. I don't think there was anyone in the room who wasn't touched by her presentation, including our wonderful catering team from the Senior Boys' 1st XI Football Team.
Her achievements in such a short time following a near-death experience are truly remarkable. Her honesty in sharing her ongoing challenges, her determination to take responsibility for her recovery and return to work, and her commitment to giving back to the support groups that helped her along the way were both humbling and inspiring. Miriam is a valued member of the Cambridge community and a wonderful role model for her 15-year-old son.
This is our final opportunity to seek host families for an incoming overseas exchange student this year. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact either myself or Roger Lewis.
Nigel D also reminded the club about the Sight Project, which collects unwanted prescription glasses for repurposing. If you are interested in establishing a collection point within your local community, please get in touch with Nigel. This is a very worthwhile initiative that helps restore the gift of sight to those in need.
Unfortunately, due to some technical difficulties, we were unable to view the new Garden Festival website. However, we look forward to seeing the finished product and the developments that have been made. I am also excited that David P has begun work on updating our Rotary website, helping to strengthen our profile and engagement within the community.
Thank you all for contributing to another enjoyable and successful evening.
Kind regards, Shona Devoy President, Rotary Club of Cambridge
Our guest speaker, Miriam Ellis, the Cycle Coffee Co founder
Last week our guest speaker Miriam gave a powerful talk to the members as to how she overcame a traumatic brain injury to now run the Cycle Coffee business, known to many in the club.
Miriam also enjoyed catching up with old friends, too.
Catering last week by the CHS Football 1st XI
President Shona meeting the boys prior to the meeting, then thanking them after the meal.
The Rotary Cambridge Garden Festival Survey - Please give your feedback
The Board are very keen to know what the consensus of the club members is for the future of this fundraiser. If you haven't already provided feedback, please do so here.
Upcoming Speakers
August 6: Camille Guzwell – Broadcaster, The Breeze
Camille Guzwell is a well-known and much-loved broadcaster with The Breeze, where her warmth, humour and genuine interest in people have made her a familiar voice to listeners across the Waikato.
Beyond the microphone, Camille is a passionate supporter of her community, regularly championing local organisations, events and charities, and using her platform to celebrate the people and stories that make our region such a great place to live. Her approachable nature, infectious enthusiasm and quick wit have made her a favourite at community events and a trusted voice on local issues.
Camille will share a little about her journey in radio, what goes on behind the scenes, and some of the memorable people, experiences, and moments she's encountered along the way.
Schools Speech Contest
The annual speech contest, which Rotary Cambridge organises and sponsors, is being held in the Cambridge East School hall on Tuesday 4 August at 6pm. This is a fantastic event with young people between the ages of 9 and 13 presenting speeches, and competing for the Murray Thompson memorial trophy. Our own Kim Prichard and Shona Devoy are part of the judging team, with Ken Leatham keeping our speakers to time.
A great evening to come along and enjoy the confidence and skills of our speech makers, where you will be entertained and informed.

Rotary Cambridge Almoners/Welfare Officers
Thank you to LesleyAnn Thomas and Chris Smiley for agreeing to be our club Almoners, or perhaps better described as our Welfare Officers. This is an important role for our club to ensure members and their families feel supported in times of health challenges and hardship.
Please let LesleyAnn or Chris know if there is anyone in our Rotary family that is in need of support.

Eye Care for Africa - We want your old and unused specs
This is a follow up from my one minute promotion on this topic at Rotary last Thursday. Rotarians are encouraged to bring their unwanted specs to Rotary where they will be collected and sent to Havelock North, where they will be sorted and despatched to Africa and put to good use..
It would be good if those of you living in retirement villages around Cambridge could promote this project in their respective villages.
Many thanks, Nigel D
