FROM PRESIDENT BEV

President’s message ….

Grant recipients evening – Thursday
It was good to hear from the organisations who were recipients of our annual grant round.  All were very grateful and I’m sure appreciated the opportunity to meet Rotary members and to provide information on how they are helping the community

It was appropriate to have these volunteers at our meeting on Thursday given that from 20 to 26 June the country celebrates National Volunteer Week and formally thanks those who so generously give of their time. Organisations and groups from around the country are run by and benefit from volunteers – which includes of course our own Rotarians.  Each club is required by Rotary International to report its total volunteer hours and these are then converted to dollar terms.  Studies estimated the value of Rotary member volunteer hours at $850 million a year which is based on a conservative estimate of nearly 47 million hours of volunteer effort generated by Rotary members in a typical year.

And that’s just Rotary – the value and economic impact of volunteers throughout the country and the world is immense and we could not operate without our volunteers.

Care Packages Project – still opportunity to donate items
Thank you to members who generously donated items for the Care Package project initiated by the Hands Up 2 Help team.  Evie, Jessica and Aidan were amazed at the response which exceeded their expectations and they send a big thank you.  There’s still time to donate so if you were not at Thursday’s meeting or still to donate, items will be collected at our changeover evening and the meeting the following week. The students would be delighted.

Evie sent me a text message – “Yes we were all very happy with the way it went.  It has been great to be able to spread the word about us.  I’m delighted by the response for our care packages. Thank you.”

New Members
What a privilege it was to induct three new members – Rollo Webb, Tim Gurnsey and Roger Dudfield.  We look forward to working with them and enjoying their company on Rotary projects and in fellowship situations.

Paul Harris Fellow
A huge privilege and honour to present John Bishop with a Paul Harris Fellow certificate and pin.  John has not only made a financial donation but has contributed enormously to Rotary in Cambridge over the years and to the community through other work.  He is generous with his time and commitment and is a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission of The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace.

Give Every Child a Future
A reminder that this centennial project is ongoing for three years.  Remember it takes only $45 to fully vaccinate a child against:
• Rotavirus, a leading cause of death from diarrhoea in under-five-yearolds;
• Pneumococcal disease, a major cause of meningitis, pneumonia and blood poisoning in young      children; and
• Human papillomavirus, the cause of cervical cancer.
Consider donating $45 for each of your immediate family members. See Bev Heron.

Changeover – 1 July
Looking forward to our changeover on Thursday and an opportunity to reflect on the past year and hear from PE Ian on his plans for 2021/2022.

THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

Notes – 24 June 2021

Over 60 members and guests presented Sergeant John Bishop with a challenge to create “Law and Order”. He rose to the occasion and, by way of a bit of Viking raid and plunder, used his inimitable skill to suitably introduce our President.

“It’s great to have John back” said President Bev, a sentiment heartily endorsed by all 47 members present. She reminded us of the appropriateness of National Volunteer Week and added that internationally, Rotarians had, according to a study, contributed the equivalent of US$850M in time in a 12 month period in helping others. President Bev also noted the celebration of Matariki. She then welcomed everyone else before inviting each of the representatives from the organisations who had been recipients in our recent grant round to let us know how our funding had helped them.

Athletics & Harriers Club - to complete the refurbishment of their clubhouse and sheds so as to provide a ‘home’ for members and hirers.
Autumn Festival Trust – as basic organisational funding for their 10-day community event.
Community Gardens – for the cost of levelling bumps in the orchard thereby making mowing easier. Exists solely on donations to produce crops for those in need.
Cambridge Primary School – for special work with those children who needed extra help so that they can have the same experiences and opportunities as the majority.
Stroke & Rehabilitation Club – towards the cost of a venue for about 35 disabled persons and carers who meet weekly for mutual help and essential socializing.
Young Mariners (one being in uniform) – for air tents without which they would not have been able to enter the national competition.
Children First Charitable Trust – in supporting an holistic approach to resiliance training for teachers and parents to help children remain positive and better able to cope with life’s problems.
Kids in Need – to help mainly grandparents with rearing their grandchildren who have been uplifted because of family situations. The extent and cost of this work is increasing.
Mosaic Choir – as rehearsal space is expensive, some assistance for hall hire. This is the only unauditioned community choir in Cambridge and has grown from 28 to 82. (Commercial Break:  Next concert at St. Peter’s is on 3 July 2021 and tickets are available.)
Stragglers Charity Car Show – raises funds for fragile children (last year $49,000) but needs the grant to promote the main event where the donations are obtained.
Te Miro Settlers Hall Inc – pay for professional cleaning of stage curtains.
Achievement House – exists to provide opportunities for disabled persons and needs funds for administration and maintenance. “Come and see what we do and how your grant is used.”

President Bev then handed the meeting over to (after a senior moment!) Sergeant John.

Sergeant John said that volunteers “run the nation”. Rotary recognises the sterling work done by all those who it can help by providing some financial assistance. Members rose to applaud all the volunteers running the organisations represented.

The next generation of volunteers from Cambridge High School was then introduced - Hands Up 2 Help group. Evie Ismay (Founder), Jessica Thomas and Aidan Dobson are the nucleus of this small group presently doing projects helping needy folk in Cambridge. Toys have been collected and distributed. Letters have been written to older, and often lonely people in rest homes. It’s hoped to expand both the number of volunteers, by inter-house competitions within CHS, and the extent of their projects, particularly with regard to the environment. Rotarians had been asked to donate specific items for care packages for the needy. President Bev, in thanking the three scholars revealed that Evie was her granddaughter. The donations can continue, please, for the next two or three weeks.

The representatives of the other organisations then departed and Sergeant John – eventually – restored order. Although the programme had followed that of previous presidents, he commented, President Bev had fared no better and we were running late.

President Bev then inducted three new members -
  • Rollo Webb supported by his wife, Sue; introduced by David Blewden.
  • Tim Gurnsey supported by his daughter, Sarah (as his wife Morag was working); introduced by John Bullick.
  • Roger Dudfield supported by his wife Penny; introduced by Don Wilson.

President Bev
  • Following Jan Bilton’s resignation on her move to Blenheim, the Nominations Committee has selected Andrew Bateman as Vocational Services Director. The nomination was proposed by Ian Grant and seconded by John Bishop. This appointment was approved by acclamation.

President Bev then presented John Bishop with a Paul Harris Fellow recognition. The citation was read by President Bev. All present congratulated and recognised John with a standing ovation. Responding, John passed on the comment by his surgeons and confirmed that he was “ecstatic” to have been “saved” by their skills. He announced that he had made other donations during his recovery.

“This is my penultimate meeting as president, and the last Club Meeting under my watch” said President Bev. In closing the meeting, she thanked all the members for their wonderful fellowship and support.
