Don’t Forget ….. this coming Thursday 6^th September we will be at the Resthaven Centre at 4 Vogel Street.

There is plenty of parking on-site at number 4. There is parking on both sides of the driveway as you head down to the Centre via the main entrance and in addition to the driveway car-parking, there are two mobility parks right outside the Centre and a number of other carparks. If you’re fairly mobile, please consider parking in the driveway parks and leaving the ones outside the Centre for our members who might appreciate being able to park a little closer.

This Week

President Ray welcomed members for our final meeting at Cambridge High School with a reminder of the power of positive thinking.

Anthony Merrington, International Ocean Racing

Anthony, who was introduced by Tom Pickering, is a professional sailor who grew up in Sydney and now resides in Cambridge. He learned to sail from a very young age in traditional small boats and graduated in his early twenties into single man Lasers used in Olympic regattas. He came close to Olympic selection for Australia but learned in the process how to train and commit to a dream. He started crewing for races in larger and larger boats and eventually completed his first Sydney to Hobart race which he has now done on 15 occasions, finishing 13 times and winning 3 times. Typically these boats are 65 – 70 footers with about 15 crew who live in very basic conditions when they are not on deck crewing. This experience led in due course to his first opportunity to crew in the Volvo Round the World Ocean Race in 2001 – 2002. He has subsequently competed in the Joules Verne Trophy and completed a second Volvo Ocean Race. Anthony provided great photos and stories about the extremes of exhilaration and fear on many occasions – everything from broken masts 2000 miles from land, to avoiding icebergs at night, to sailing barely under control at breakneck speeds in enormous seas. This was a fine presentation and Anthony was thanked on behalf of the Club by Richard Johnstone.

Sergeant Bruce and Bill Wilson were raffle winners this week and each took possession of that very rare commodity – a bottle of alcoholic drink (capped!).

This Coming Week

Next Thursday 6^th September the programme is a Surprise at our new venue at the Resthaven Centre. It is also a Partners night so bring your Partner to experience the Surprise and be rewarded for coming and check out our new venue!

Key Updates

Marshalling for the Harriers event should be in your diary – coming up on the 16^th of September. It’s important that you talk to Bill Robinson if you are not able to marshal as the policy is to roster you on unless advised otherwise. We really need a good turn-out and the income we receive from this event has increased to $1,000 so let’s get out there and support the Harriers.

Quiz Night. Roger Gordon and Chris Crickett are still looking for members to join them in the Rotary team for Wednesday 5^th September. Doors open 6.30pm, quiz gets underway at 7pm at The Clubhouse, Cambridge Raceway. It’s $20 for the team entry. Give Chris Crickett a call if you’re interested.

TRIKE PROGRAM THANKS

Hello Ray,

I am sorry I missed you a few weeks back. Aaron arranged a visit and of course this was the same day that I developed Man Flu Level 10.

On behalf of the Home of Cycling Charitable Trust Board, the staff at the Avantidrome and all the many people the benefit from our trike program I extend a huge thanks. The support from Rotary is fantastic. The trike program and the work being done by Aaron, his team and their army of volunteers is an absolute source of pride for us all. The program is transformational and opens up so many possibilities.

NOTE The Duty "Magic Moment" is: A short comment referencing something in our community, or within Rotary which you find inspiring, encouraging or adding to the joy and pleasure of life. It should be an uplifting story that takes no more than two minutes to deliver. Ideally it will be something from the last week or so, something others may not yet have heard about.

For example Ray started the year by referencing two inspiring young Kiwi’s honoured, that week, by the Queen for their work in gender equality and mental health. They were Alexia Hilbertidou (aged 19) and Ezekiel Raui (aged 20) who had already made a difference.
