Community Trikes Programme At The Avantidrome

Aaron Ure & Scott Gemmill spoke to us about the Community Trikes Programme. What a phenomenal service this programme provides to our community! Here’s a few summary points from their presentation
  • The programme caters for all ages and abilities in the community
  • Year on year growth in the programme and set to top 4000 rides this year
  • Some of the riders are now entering mainstream events including The Rev and the Hamilton Half Marathon
  • Under Aaron’s guidance, Scott gave us a demo on the trike – the very trike that our Rotary club helped to fund
  • And we were treated to some wonderful success stories – heart-warming and inspiring to say the least
  • And did you know there are 10 truffle farms in our region?
I know I’m inspired to give the trikes a go now and I’m hoping some of our other members might pick up the challenge too.

YOUR WEEKLY ROSTER

Please take note of the Duty Roster and be in good time for your duties.

NOTE The Duty "Magic Moment" is: A short comment referencing something in our community, or within Rotary which you find inspiring, encouraging or adding to the joy and pleasure of life. It should be an uplifting story that takes no more than two minutes to deliver. Ideally it will be something from the last week or so, something others may not yet have heard about.

    RESTHAVEN
I received the attached (slightly edited version) letter on Friday morning.

As contributors to Resthaven, including the Community Hall facility, over the years it is good to know that the staff there take a great deal of pride in the facilities and are determined to maintain them in good order.  As users of these facilities we are rightly expected to play our part.

The new duties have not yet been finalised as we are still learning all the differences between CHS and our new home. Until this happens (and even afterwards if you uncertain) please ask what is expected rather than assume there is nothing more to do.

It is important we maintain a good relationship with Resthaven if we are to continue to enjoy our use of the facilities. We all need a little patience as these changes work their way through, thank you for yours.

    Dear Ray,

I arrived at the Centre at 7:45am this morning and unfortunately have to advise you of certain things not attended to by Rotary last night.
    • Heat pumps left on
    • Dishwashers left on and not drained.
    • Tables not wiped clean
    • Drinks bench and servery not wiped clean
    • Wheelie tables and chairs in foyer not put away.  I did show XXX where they all went.
    • Library lights on all night – I think possibly someone must have hit the wrong button on the pad and did not realize it.  If the door was closed no one would have noticed – so that was unfortunate.

Also to note, that before moving wheelie tables foot breaks must be off on all wheels and clip locks for tilting tables must be secure.

I realize that some of these things are difficult when it is a new group every week taking care of certain jobs.

Secondly, if anyone from Resthaven asks you about not putting the tables in place for Tai Chi on Fridays, you can tell them that I asked you not to reposition furniture for my own reasons which is to vacuum etc on Friday mornings and set the room up for whatever we have booked.  I will keep you posted on this fact as I do not believe Rotary should not be responsible for furniture changing when it is not always Tai Chi that we have booked.

Please contact me if you wish to discuss anything that will make these issues easier for Rotary.  We want to make your use of the Centre as enjoyable and as stress free as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you and of continuing to help making the operations as smooth as possible.

    Warm regards,
    Gaylene.

    LATEST BOARD MEETING NOTES
    Notes from the Board meeting:
    • A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with Achievement House for our continued use of their shed for Bookarama and additional storage as needed. Our donation for this will continue to be $5,000 pa. The MOU is evergreen but can be cancelled with one month's notice. This gives both parties some surety for the future.
    • The Board agreed to support our DG's water project in PNG with a donation of $2k towards a total cost estimate of $5k - other clubs involved are expected to be Te Awamutu and Kihikihi.
    • The International Committee is continuing discussions with the Rotary Club of Tavanui regarding our next project there. Greg is looking to involve another club from our district in this. Clare Hamilton has offered to head up a hygiene project with Days for Girls at the same time.
    • The go ahead was given for a new umbrella website for the club. This is now live and incorporates our Taste Waikato project. There is provision for all new projects to use this new site avoiding a bigger proliferation in future. Existing websites will as usual but are linked to the new site: www. rotarycambridge.nz Please note there is no  .co  in the address.
    THANKS ROTARY!
    Hi Bill,

I just wanted to send a quick note to say thanks again to the Cambridge Rotary Club for sponsoring me to take part in the Rotary Student Youth Exchange back in 2010 (I spent my year abroad in Chile - and my sister came back out to NZ for a couple of months).   It truly was such an incredible, life changing year.

The older I get the more I feel grateful for all the people I’ve met in my life and friendships I’ve had the opportunity to make.

June last year I started another year abroad this time as an Au Pair in New York. Prior to this beginning Samantha and I (Rotary Exchange student from Orewa) did a road trip down the West Coast of the USA starting in Seattle where we attended the wedding of a friend we made while on exchange. During our road trip we caught up with 4 other exchange students in various places.

A month ago I organized a reunion with some of the 2010 exchange students. We traveled from Seattle, Detroit, Toronto, North Carolina, New York, Pittsburgh & Boston to Silver Spring, Pennsylvania and spent the weekend in a cabin in the woods catching up - one of the highlights of my year in the USA.

I also just had my Chilean Mum and sister visit New York from Chile and they are hoping to come out to New Zealand for Christmas next year. My Chilean brother has recently moved to Australia and is hoping to come out for Christmas this year.

I have attached a couple of pictures. The first one from our reunion and the second is my Chilean Sister, mum and I in Central Park.

So thanks again for the year that connected me with so many people and allowed me to form some amazing lifelong friendships.

    Best,
    Jo-ellen
