It was great to see a good attendance at the meeting on Thursday to hear the two St Peter’s students – Jordan and Tallulah share their experiences at the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum. Catering by the CHS Hockey teams couldn’t have been better and we were offered plenty of selection. Their fundraising exercise by the teams will go towards their uniforms and equipment. They were delighted with the $1,000 raised.
District Conference
Together with other Rotarians and partners I will spend the weekend in the sunny Hawkes Bay at the District Conference. Thanks to PE Ian Grant for organizing our accommodation and for Bev Heron and Deb Robinson for coordinating our themed costumes for the Saturday night dinner. We look forward to a good lineup of speakers as well as other events on the conference programme.
I hope you have a good week and look forward to seeing you all next Thursday. In the meantime brush up on your ministerial portfolios that Sergeant John announced at the meeting – the media may be asking you questions!!!!!
Meeting Notes 20 May 2021
Acting Sergeant John Tarbutt announced the sad and unexpected passing of President Bev’s stepson, Gwillam.
Other guests for the evening were Liz Grant, prospective members Tim Gurnsey and Ralph and members Tom Pickering, Mark Hanlon back from long absences – Waiheke and God’s Own respectively.
Bev shared the respectful thoughts and sentiments expressed by Gwillam’s work colleagues and associates. It has been an incredibly tough year for our President.
Our guest speakers, Jordan and Tallula shared their experiences at the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum (“the Forum”).
Both spoke of it being “the best time of our lives” given the well-balanced programme and the friendships made and experiences shared. It seems that the bio-chemistry, a visit to a police station and defence facility and mentor Sergei (whose name cropped up a good few times, I wonder why….) were highlights
.Both girls had considered medicine as their career prior to their attendance, but both were now considering serious alternatives – bio-chemistry and general science.
Sergei got mentioned a few more times, as did phrases like “really cool time”.
Altogether, these girls are a pair of inspiring young Kiwis with the world at their feet. Through Chris Smiley, we wished them well in their futures.
The raffle was won by David Smith (again) and Shirley.

Bev advised that the Bruised Brothers band had performed at Lauriston Park on Wednesday. The band has raised around $4,400 for the Club over the past 12 months – well done, guys.
She then thanked the Cambridge High hockey teams (and their mums) for a truly excellent repast, presenting them with $1,000 towards their team expenses as reward for their catering efforts. The team spokesman delivered an eloquent response.
Acting Sergeant John outlined the Club “shadow” cabinet and generally fleeced the pockets of all.
Ray Milner let us know of the impact on world food production that Nobel Peace Prize winner Ernest Borlaug the “father of the green revolution” had had on food production, particularly in countries like Mexico, India and Pakistan.
President Bev closed the meeting at 7.45 pm.
