FROM PRESIDENT IAN

This Week

Thanks to everyone who attended this week’s club meeting, and congratulations to Gary Smith and his wife Rose who joined our club after a recent move from Rotorua. Gary and Rose transferred across from Rotary Sunrise Rotorua, and both look forward to getting to know our membership ‘as we’ also look forward to getting to know Gary, Rose, and their family over the coming months.

Our guest seekers Ellen and Aaron from Raleigh Street Christian Centre gave us and insight into their 24/7 Youth programme.  With around 1.6 million New Zealanders under the age of 25, representing about 33% of our population. this population becoming increasingly diverse, with more and more children and young people identifying with multiple ethnicities and identities, young New Zealanders need more time spent with them. They need more listening, more encouraging and more “hanging in there” with more people who can be there for them. The 24/7 programme has an approach based on relationships and meaningful programmes. It was great hear Ellen and Aaron encompasses role modelling, being accessible to young people and being around to help young people make good choices.

Next Week

Next week the second of our committee organised evenings this event run by Alan Van Niekerk and his Youth and New Generation committee. To be held at our newly renovated Cambridge Cricket Pavilion with a theme of Picnic in the Park (weather permitting - with a bit of fun and games). Please bring a chair, plate, cutlery and something to drink. Food will be provided on site.

Rotary Foundation

Please consider giving to the Rotary Foundation in this time of need.  I realise we are personally unable to solve the world’s problems, but I do know our desire to help is strong. By giving to the Rotary Foundation and encouraging others working toward the same goals, we will know that all funding generated, is directed to those who need it most.

NZ Blood Bank Collection

We are once again supporting NZ Blood service with their Cambridge collection on Monday 28 March and Tuesday 29 March. After the completion of their donations, donors are required to “take five” to ensure that they are fit to leave. Our role is to man the hospitality centre, providing them with refreshments and to alert the NZ Blood nursing staff should a donor feel any aftereffects. Fortunately, this is an infrequent occurrence.

It is not a physically demanding role, but with the direct interface with a public-spirited section of the Cambridge community, an extremely satisfying and enjoyable one.

We have one shift still vacant – from 7.30am on Tuesday morning until 10.00am. Please contact me if you can spare two and a half hours for a most worthwhile cause.

THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

Rotary Meeting Minutes/Notes --- Cambridge High School 17th March 2022

33 members attended the meeting

To begin, President Ian provided an update on venue discussions as follows:
  • The club will now hold a “picnic in the park” evening beside  the new Cricket Club rooms so we get the opportunity to see if they might be suitable for our Rotary meetings. This is planned for next Thursday night 24th March at the usual time.

  • Work is planned on the Cambridge Town Hall. A few weeks ago President Ian met with the Renovation Committee and there could be an opportunity for us to hold our meetings there once the work is completed which is planned for later in 2023.  He understands viewing will be arranged once the work is completed.

  • There are three options to be considered if we include our current venue at the High School.

  • Members are urged to make time for these visits.

President Ian welcomed Aaron and Ellen from the Raleigh Street Christian Centre who are youth workers working in the Middle School and High School.  The purpose of their work is to encourage students to engage in their learning, which has shown good success.  The guests were thanked by the President for their time, not only in their work but for also attending our meeting.

Gary and Rose Smith were welcomed to the meeting and President Ian inducted Gary as a member of our club.  Gary comes from Rotorua, having recently shifted to Cambridge.  He was a member of the Rotorua Breakfast Club and he is looking forward to contributing again to Rotary.

President Ian commented that there continues to be opportunity to review current practice to achieve change and increase membership.
