Safe Driving in NZ
An attention-holding talk by Fay Haakma about the looming prospect many Rotarian’s face (some sooner than later) - resitting your driver’s license at 80years old. Fay began by giving a quick bio of her life: originating from Taranaki, Fay trained as a teacher but also ran a driving school there, with an emphasis in teaching teenagers safe driving skills. Owning a Bach at Whakamaru, Kay and family are all keen water skiers. Eventually following their children to the Waikato and Cambridge due to waterskiing interests Fay and husband Warren started MooLoo Driving School. A busy couple running 2 businesses between them, they purchased Gabriel’s clothing store in town as well. Fay gave Rotary members some basic road rules, particularly around roundabouts, tips on getting through intersections and what Driving Inspectors will fail you on. It was easy to see Fay has no trouble keeping her target audience of teenagers interested and engaged in their safe driving courses. An excellent presenter whose audience of Rotarians went away with a tip or two to brush up on their driving skills.
Lake Te Koutu Clean Up – President Ray walked around the Lake to assess what was needed and did the clean up himself using a found paper bag. Most interesting item a babies pacifier; least ‘user friendly’ a dead rat.
Rotary Days – anniversary project – 23 February – with the conclusion of the Lake clean-up a new project is urgently required. If you have a long-held passion that Rotary should be doing something that would fit the bill and that you are prepared to organise, or help organise see President Ray ASAP.
Club Historian needed – Rotary NZ has commissioned a professional historian to write the history of Rotary in NZ in time for the centenary of our first two clubs, one in Auckland the other Wellington, in 2021. The person will liaise between the club and the research team. An interest in the history of our club would be essential and some time to investigate what records we do have stored away that may be of use.
Bookarama – Sorting starts again this Monday 9am at Achievement House. All welcome.
District Conference 15-17 March. Not too late to register. A good turn out from our club is requested as costs are low with Claudlands Hamilton being the venue.
The Club noted with sadness the passing of a former member Gordon Knight.
