THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

Meeting Notes for 8 November 2018

About 40 members gathered at Hill Laboratories in Hamilton for a vocational site visit.
Roger and a team of employees escorted small groups around the labs describing the various analyses being carried out by the equipment viewed through the glass windows into the ‘clean areas’ manned by technicians and scientists wearing appropriate lab clothing.

Samples are received between 6:00am and 6:30pm, each receiving a unique job number. Once prepared the samples are analysed using the latest high tech equipment costing anywhere from $100k to about $800k with most labs containing at least two of each machine. Almost all testing is automated and the machines work for up to twenty hours a day. Rest apparently is not good for them as start up is when they are most likely to fail.

The lab uses its own standard samples for calibration and most equipment is self alerting for problems.

The business model is that the labs do not collect samples and are therefore not responsible for sample quality or representation, they also do not interpret the results, and all samples are blind tested – no one knows where the sample originated.

The labs were purpose-built in a pre-existing building (New Zealand Post). Planning involving senior technicians and operators took more than a year and the fit-out about another year. The floor was raised to allow drainage and other services to be located in an accessible basement (crawl space) and electricity, air conditioning, gas and other services located above the ceiling with dedicated access ways and 2m of headroom. It was describes as unique in the southern hemisphere and state of the art.

The site employs 300+ with another 60 or so located in Wellington, Christchurch and Blenheim.

Following the tour members enjoyed a superb meal catered for by Roger’s café staff.

Cambridge Christmas Parade

CAMBRIDGE CHRISTMAS PARADE

Sunday 2nd December

For a good number of years Cambridge Rotary has provided crowd control for the Cambridge Christmas Parade. We have been asked again to carry out that role.

I am calling for members to volunteer their time again this year. It would be appreciated if we can get a good number to carry out this task.

If you can help please e-mail me at dgfinn@xtra.co.nz or give me a call on
Mob 0272814113 or Hm 823 3302.

I would like to think that we can achieve the numbers by a phone call or e-mail back to me but should that not be the case I will give you a call so we can meet our ongoing support for the event.

Look forward to hearing from you. All the best.
Dennis Finn

YOUR WEEKLY ROSTER

Please take note of the Duty Roster and be in good time for your duties.

NOTE The Duty "Magic Moment" is: A short comment referencing something in our community, or within Rotary which you find inspiring, encouraging or adding to the joy and pleasure of life. It should be an uplifting story that takes no more than two minutes to deliver. Ideally it will be something from the last week or so, something others may not yet have heard about.

Te Kuiti Rotary Club - Dinner & Auction - International Youth Exchange

Te Kuiti Rotary are proud to have another successful applicant participate in the Rotary International Youth Exchange programme.

Maija Stephens has been selected to go to Austria in 2019.  You may know Maija as a talented artist, photographer or performer. She is currently a Year 13 student at Te Kuiti High School.

To support her we are hosting a dinner and auction on 30 November at The Homestead, State Highway 3, Hangatiki.  Tickets are $45.00 p.h.  This entitles you to a delicious meal, entertainment, the opportunity to bid on local art and craft, advertising airtime and many other items.  There will be a "Lucky Supporters" draw and multiple raffle prizes.

To make this evening a success we invite you to get some friends together and come along for a fun evening.

Please let me know by return email yvonne@forgesons.co.nz if you would like to attend.  I'll put some tickets aside for you.  Or alternatively, call in at Forgeson Law, Taupiri Street, Te Kuiti

We look forward to hearing from you.
