Centennial Project “Give Every Child a Future”
An excellent article in this month’s RDU magazine by Michelle Tanner entitled “The power of vaccines” talking about the “Give Every Child a Future” centennial project. She explains the three diseases the vaccines targets and finishes by saying “… Your $45 can save one child’s life”.
Remember that Rotary Cambridge is supporting this project through a number of fundraisers and also by personal contributions. You can donate as little as $45 to fully vaccinate a child or you may choose to increase that amount equivalent to each member of your immediate family. This way a number of children will have their lives saved.
Contributions (which are tax deductible) are currently being accepted. Please see treasurer Bev Heron or President Bev.
Committee meetings
Good outcomes from the committee meetings held on Thursday (see reporting back notes below).
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner – a great night out
Although a week or two back now I’m sure those who attended had a great night out at the Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner event. The theme “The meal that Mum would have made” was certainly replicated at the dinner I attended – including roast lamb and mashed carrots and parsnips – finishing off with a delicious bread and butter pudding and apple crumble. Thanks to David Blewden and Brian Palmer for their organization and to those who hosted.
This coming week we will hear some of the jokes that were judged “the best” at each venue.
Bruised Brothers gig
Band members were “excused” from the meeting on Thursday as they had a gig at Lauriston Park. I popped in to see them after Rotary when they were just packing up. A great night had been had by all. The guys had played for three hours and took only a short break after two. Well done to you all and thank you for your efforts and commitment to raise funds for Rotary.
Chamber BA5 – 3 June
Rotary will host BA5 members at our meeting on 3 June. This will be an informal night with finger food. LesleyAnn will provide more details at this week’s meeting.
- – Thursday 1 July (partners welcome)
Notes – 13 May 2021
Unrepentant hoarder, Ian Grant (Acting Sergeant at short notice) admitted to having kept a brick from the Berlin Wall but redeemed himself by quoting Churchill and introducing our President in glowing terms.
President Bev commented the Bruised Brothers had a gig and therefore the usual attendees were not present. She acknowledged David and Brian for their organisation of the Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner event and thanked all the hosts. The highlight of one dinner was David Smith’s extensive repertoire of jokes.
President Bev also applauded the four speakers at the very successful Prospective Members’ meeting and said that it was now “up to us” to follow-up the contacts.
Sadly, Margaret Nicholson passed away this week and was remembered for her work during her short time with us.
Our Quiz Team came second last night. We were told (only in his absence!) that this was mainly due to Chris Crickett.

Acting Sergeant Ian extracted fines with “not even a squeak” from Bev Heron.
“Did You Know” that Gordon Calder had left his notes behind! Even so he gave us some racing facts including that Cambridge has the largest Training Track in Australasia which is used by some 1,300 horses every month.
President Bev closed the meeting with the hope that we enjoy the colder weather.
