Notes – 22 April 2021
Andrew Bateman standing in as Sergeant eventually created sufficient order to open the meeting and commented “Bunch of old chooks!” Recovering his composure with the help of a 3,011 pound lollipop from Denmark, he introduced President Bev.
President Bev said that it has been a busy week and her thanks to Laurie Graham and the team for the successful Charity Dinner were applauded. She also thanked Bev Heron for attending to the financial aspects and commented that the auction exceeded expectations and that there had been a very generous response from those present.
Urban Miners
President Bev congratulated Mark Hanlon and David Blewden and the team for their well deserved Highly Commended at the Waipa Business Awards in the Waste Minimisation – Environmental category. The Urban Miners’ team was warmly applauded. Bronwyn Byers was thanked for her expertise in preparing the nomination.
In response, David asked for help with processing waste – no special skills or physical ability needed (so anyone can join in). Times in and out of business hours are being arranged. There are “Jobs for Africa” so everyone can get involved. He also wants to extend the project into the whole community and has already received numerous offers of help and support.

President Bev read out those proposed as the incoming officers and directors for the 2021/2022 year and provided an opportunity to allow any other candidates to be nominated. International – Ken Leatham
Give Every Child a Future – a AUS/NZ Centennial project has been our President’s major project of choice. Ken estimated there should be $2,000 from the Chainsaw & Firewood Raffle and another $3,000 if we sell all the remaining firewood. Over 120 hours of work have already been done, including the effort at John Bishop’s home for which he was sufficiently grateful as to provide the beer.
President Bev thanked all the Directors and then introduced Bev Heron who “does all the Treasurer's work with great aplomb”.
Treasurer's Report
Bev Heron showed details of the finances and noted that the grants were all tentative figures. The Charity Dinner figures also needed up-dating. Otherwise, despite the Covid restrictions, we have had a good year.
The Treasurer said that she was amazed at the generosity of Charity Dinner donors. She also reminded members that $45 is all it takes to vaccinate a child in the South Pacific Islands against three serious conditions. “Give $45 for each of your children and/or grandchildren” to the Give Every Child a Future Project. It’s a charitable donation and is tax-free.
Notices
Adventure Club
David Blewden reported that the Blue Springs Walk which went well, in good weather and due to part of the track blocked off found an alternative route. The next venture is on 17 July 2021 and is a mountain bike ride taking in the secret hot tubs.
Urban Miners
Urban Miners collection on Sunday attracted 76 people. So far the project has raised $2,600 including $66 from donors and $50 from the litre bottles.
Prospective New Members’ evening – 6 May
“Pretty sharp!” is how John Bullick described this project which has invited 22 guests with 2 more listed tonight. The evening will start at 6pm and last one hour. There will be finger food but no meal. Roger Gordon will be MC and four speakers will present their versions of Rotary. There will be a rolling video about Rotary and a Mock Sergeant's session (‘gold’ coin only) but no raffle. To be a success, this needs a 100% turnout of members to mix and mingle and show our guests what Rotary is about.
Chain Saw/Wood Raffle
Because of the awesome response, the draw has had to be postponed but will take place shortly.
Fire Wood Sales
Anyone who may be interested in purchasing a trailer load/loads of firewood from us in the next couple of weeks as we have approximately 20 loads available for sale at $125 per cubic metre .
Inter-Club Visit to Birkenhead
The proposed visit on 15/16 May may have to be delayed as it is a busy month with the conference and other activities.
ANZAC Day
President Bev will lay a wreath at the Civic Ceremony on behalf of Rotary Cambridge in recognition of the sacrifices made for our community. She invited anyone who wished to accompany her.
Achievement House
Just a little help is all that some clients need, said John Tarbutt, when asking for 2/3 volunteers.
Do You Know
How many men from New Zealand died or were wounded in two World Wars and other conflicts? Richard Johnstone gave us the sobering statistics which, even as chilling as they are do not include the thousands who suffered because of the losses. That’s why we remember them on ANZAC Day which was created to honour the members of the
Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who served in the
Gallipoli Campaign, their first engagement in the
First World War. It now commemorates all military personnel who serve or have served in all conflicts.
Acting Sergeant Andrew Bateman elicited fines and (with assistance from Chris Crickett) laughs.
President Bev commended our next week’s speaker, Hamilton Airport Company CEO Mark Morgan before closing the meeting.
