President’s message ….
 
Another great attendance on Thursday. Thank you to Lyndsay Mason for joining us. We were delighted to see John Bishop back at a meeting and looking well.  Good to see Tom Pickering again and we welcomed Greg Gascoigne’s guest – Neale Grubb.
 
It was a pleasure to meet and welcome our RYLA attendees – Simran Mundi and Ariana Ranui who are part of the Hill Laboratories team.
District Conference 21-23 May
Those of us who travelled to Hastings for the District Conference enjoyed a warm welcome, great speakers and fantastic entertainment – but to top it all off our club won the trophy for the Best Fancy Dress at the Saturday night dinner.  I can honestly say we “stole the show” with our portrayal of “Mid Life Crisis” and the theme “Call the Midwife”.
Thanks to Deb Robinson, Bev Heron and Jacqui Leatham for coming up with the “Call the Midwife” idea and co-ordinating the costumes.
 
Not only did Cambridge win this trophy but we were presented with a Club Major Donor award for contributions exceeding US$100,000 to the Rotary Foundation – congratulations to all.
 
We came a very close second for the most attendance at conference cup, being pipped at the post by Whakatane.
 
BA5 this Thursday’s meeting
The meeting on Thursday has been put together by LesleyAnn and John Bullick and promises to be an interesting evening.  Finger food will be available so please arrange to have a meal after the slightly shorter finish.
 
Did you Know that …
Jennifer Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, has been nominated to become Rotary International’s President for 2022-23, a ground-breaking selection that will make her the first woman to hold that office in the organisation’s 115-year history.
 
I have met Jennifer and heard her speak at the beginning of last year.  She is a delightfully inspirational person and an amazing, engaging speaker.

By popular request, Andrew Bateman acted as Sergeant and extended his suitability by introducing President Beverley Maul-Rogers as a prospective Nobel winner and able politician.
 
The speakers – Ariana Ranui and Simran Mundi were introduced by Andy Newman and gave us a day-by-day journey of the RYLA event. This included thought-provoking and inspirational speakers and tasks. Some were more challenging but all built individual capability as well as team spirit.
 
Both said the course enhanced their abilities, confidence and personalities. They thanked Rotary for the sponsorship and ended with the mantra “Is the type of thinking I’m doing serving me well?”
 
In answer to a question, both confirmed that listening was one of the important aspects of communication.
Another question was “How should we [Rotary] promote RYLA?” Our speakers said that they were now ambassadors for future candidates.
“What can you contribute to your company and team now?” The answer was: better communication, leadership, working as a team but being self-reliant. Both speakers agreed that, apart from making pikelets, the re-motivation was “really cool”.
 
Notices
  • LesleyAnn Thomas reminded us that BA5 members of the Chamber will attend our next Meeting. The meeting will not our usual format but more like the recent membership event.
  • Gaslight Theatre dinner and show: Jan Bilton said we need a few more participants.
  • Urban Miners: Mark Hanlon said the “Battery Bottles” were going well. Next general collection is at Te Awamutu with the TA Club on Sunday 30 May.
  • Banking: Bev Heron apologised for a hitch which meant the direct debits have been slightly delayed.
  • District Grant: Doug Lang advised our application for a District Grant had been successful which meant Cambridge Lifeskills will be able to fund much needed resources to the tune of $5,000 - $2,500 being the grant and $2,500 from the club.
  • Robyn Crickett said that 1 candidate had been proposed from Cambridge Rotary for the Outward Bound Course and reminded us that only two in total will be selected to attend.
  • The Quiz Team were successful in coming third this week.
  •  
Acting Sergeant Andrew then took his jacket off to avoid over-heating while he extracted fines from some of the 40 members present.
 
Did you Know: Don Wilson (with the aid of smiley faces) demonstrated visually how multi-tasking causes stress and changing context is wasteful.

I'VE BEEN ROSTERED A DUTY- WHAT DO I DO?

 
Club Meetings 
Attendance Duty
Time:
5.20pm in time to welcome people as they arrive at venue – currently at Cambridge High Staff room
 
 
Duty:
Welcome members and visitors alike.
 
 
How:
Record attendance and apologies on attendance sheet.
Complete name cards for all visitors to wear and record names.
Record make ups and receive attendance cards.
Provide attendance cards to visiting Rotarians. Charge $23.50 for meal unless guest of a member.
Encourage members to buy raffle tickets.
Give President list of all visitors including member’s partners and visiting Rotarians. 
Prepare summary of attendance numbers.
Hand attendance sheet to treasurer for charging of meals.
 
 
Materials:
 
Members Badges stored in cupboard meeting venue.
Raffle tickets and cash box stored in cupboard. Key to cupboard in top left pigeon hole at rear of staff room.
Attendance sheet received from attendance officer any time after midday on Wednesday. 
 
 
 
 
Welcome Duty
Time:
5.20pm in time to welcome people as they arrive.
 
 
Duty:
Welcome members and visitors alike.
 
 
How:
Stand by the entrance and greet everyone as they arrive (a great way to learn members’ names).
Introduce any visitor to the President if possible (he/she may be otherwise engaged).
Introduce the speaker to the person rostered to introduce them later in the evening. You will need to know who the speaker is and who is introducing them.
Introduce other visitors to one or more members and ask them to host the visitor for the evening.
 
 
Materials:
A handshake and a welcoming smile.
 
 
 
 
Equipment Duty 
Time:
5.15pm in time to set up before regular meeting.
Plus after the close of the meeting
 
 
Duty:
Set up attendance table.
  
How:
Place name badges so members can recover them as they arrive.
Arrange placemats on each table. Put out plates, utensils, etc on end of bench to left of servery.
Set up lectern and join 2 tables to create a top table. Data projector turned on by remote in draw and HDMI cable ready for speaker’s computer.
Place sergeant’s paraphernalia on top table (shrapnel box, fines box, raffle numbers, bell and hammer). Microphone to be placed by lectern.
Turn on sound system in right cupboard, turn on 3 power switches.
Place Presidents paraphernalia on top table (chain of office).
Place blind banner by top table behind lectern.
After the meeting return all equipment, including name badge box where you found it in cupboard. Venue should be left as it was found.

Turn as many lights off as possible, turn off heating.
Locking up:
Last one out lock bollards and shut outside door
 
 
Bar Duty
Time:
5-5.15pm in time to assist with set up before regular meeting.
 
 
Duty:
Set up bar - sell drinks - clear up afterwards.
 
 
How:
Key to Bar fridge is in top left pigeon hole.
Glassware in cupboards out back by pigeon holes, only in right cupboard.
Serve at bar before meeting from 5.30pm.
Serve members after business sessions and before meal.
Place empty bottles in recycling bins.
Return unused and part used bottles to fridge.
 
 
Materials:
 
Glassware (wineglasses) 
Locking up:
Return any unused drinks to fridge or cupboard and lock fridge.
 
 
 
Speaker Introduction
Time:
Before meeting.
 
 
Duty:
Welcome speaker - introduce to President and Club.
 
 
How:
Be in time to welcome the evening's speaker.
Introduce to President.
Ensure they are set up for any PowerPoint presentation they have with them - ask if they have a USB to use (IT duty person will take over setting up IT equipment).
Confirm that talk should be about 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions.
Provide with drink from bar (Club pays for this).
Help guest socialise with members once set up.
Sit with guest for the meeting at the top table.
Introduce the speaker to the club with brevity.
If you have looked them up on Dr Google before the meeting make sure you have the right person.
 
 
 
 
 
Thanking Speaker
Time:
After Speaker
 
 
Duty:
Thank speaker and present with small token of appreciation (if there is one).
 
 
How:
Obtain thank you gift from Sergeant.
Thanks should be extremely brief and ask the club to show its appreciation.
 
 
 
Did you know …
Time:
During Meeting (most likely at end)
 
 
Duty:
3 minutes to talk to the club on a Rotary topic – or other general topic that you know of and is interesting and/or informative. Something that you know about or have experienced – something unique if possible. Please keep this talk positive.
 
 
How:
While “Did you know ……” comment is the choice of the individual member, it is important to remember: 
Article 16 Community, National, and International affairs
Section 1 — Proper Subjects. The merits of any public question involving the general welfare of the community, the nation, and the world are of concern to the members of this club and shall be proper subjects of fair and informed study and discussion at a club meeting for the enlightenment of its members in forming their individual opinions. 
However, this club shall not express an opinion on any pending controversial public measure.
Section 2 — No Endorsements. This club shall not endorse or recommend any candidate for public office and shall not discuss at any club meeting the merits or demerits of any such candidate.
Section 3 — Non-Political.
(a) Resolutions and Opinions. This club shall neither adopt nor circulate resolutions or opinions and shall not take action dealing with world affairs or international policies of a political nature.
(b) Appeals. This club shall not direct appeals to clubs, peoples, or governments, or circulate letters, speeches, or proposed plans for the solution of specific international problems of a political nature.
 
 
 
Kitchen Duty
Time:
Follows regular meeting.
 
 
Duty:
Wash and dry bar glassware.
 
 
How:
Tables should clear glassware into kitchen.
Clear tables of crockery so caterer can wash.
Hand wash glasses and packed into boxes and return to back cupboard.
  
Materials:
Provided in kitchen
  
Locking up:
Leave with those on equipment
