President Ray introduced the Club Forum and invited Directors to present on their respective Directorships and progress to date during his year. The strategic goals where highlighted on screen.
Community – Dennis Finn
- Bookarama – again a commitment this year and sorting is occurring on most Monday mornings.
- Community support – Lugtons Fun Run coming up; also supporting other groups eg street collections
Youth – Ian Grant
- Ian apologised for not calling a meeting but there had not been a lot to do. A meeting will be called shortly.
- Interact CHS – Funds have been raised for a Shelterbox which will be presented at Conference
- Innovative Young Minds project– young women who are interested in a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) – Ian is working with a Rotary Colleague in Lower Hutt. 2 CHS students have been nominated to attend.
- RSCC are interested in what we do in the area of youth and Ian is working with a representative of the church.
- Fireworks Project – as his portfolio is not large, Ian volunteered to lead the proposed Fireworks project. He will soon be setting up a committee to deliver the event. Anyone interested please see Ian.
- Youth Directorship – Ian believes it is under-utilised. Proposal is to change the term to “New Generations”. The focus will be the same but will include membership recruitment. This is an area currently under discussion by the Board.
- With regard to considering a Rotoract Club, Ian undertook to report back on how this can be introduced.
International – Greg Gascoigne
- IYE – incoming French student. A student is keen to travel off-shore. Greg is working with Bill Robinson on this. The club needs to think about support required but the Board is committed to continuing the club’s involvement in IYE.
- Pacific Aid – keen to contribute to work in Tavenui. There are 2 teacher houses and 2 classrooms to build. Requires other club members to travel to the Islands to assist. Clare Hamilton has offered to travel with the team to promote Days for Girls.
- Noted that the Club has pledged $2,000 towards a Village Water Project on PNG
- The club has a tradition on providing assistance in the Pacific Islands rather than other under-developed countries
Vocational – Laurie Graham
President Ray presented on behalf of Laurie who had tendered his apologies.
- Laurie had followed up support for refugee families. Immigration advises that these families are encouraged to be independent. Any support required is provided by the Red Cross, and our involvement would be minimal.
- Cambridge High School is well set up to link the school with businesses so our involvement is minimal.
- Workplace visits – two have been done during this Rotary year and one more is planned.
Club Services - Robyn Crickett
- The committee has met on a regular basis.
- Social events were identified
- An interesting speaker programme had been developed
- Club was supporting the community – appeal collections, Achievement House Christmas Party, Marshalling, Taste Waikato, Garden Festival, Findit with all showing a vibrant Club
- Membership – changing way to attract new members. There has been no separate committee this year but focussing across the Rotary members
- Bruised Brothers Band – showing the community a Rotary group that is having fun while supporting the community
- Club venue change – is working well
- Almoner – important pastoral care aspect led by Bill MacMillan and Peter Fisher
- Club Forum – committed to informing members what we’re doing and getting feedback
- Women leaders on the Board and leading Projects
- Diversity amongst members – still encouraging women, different age groups and cultures
- Already planned – Waiheke Trip, Bookarama.
- How can we do better? – Buddy system for new members and visitors – people assigned to welcome and look after these people – committee is working on this
- Rotary caps and shirts – being ordered - need to work on identifying us and making us more visible – to be seen more, improve publicity, attract membership
- Need to ask – why would a younger person wish to join our Club?
- Also important is member retention
President Ray provided an overview of the Directors’ presentation.
- Club members were asked to reflect on the sort of club we wish to be particularly as we move forward to Robyn’s year
- What can you do for Rotary?
