Applications for RYLA 2019 are now open! The course is limited to the first 45
awardees.
NB. The 2019 RYLA programme is open to participants aged 20 – 26 years.
Do you know young people in your community who are showing leadership potential or skills
in their work or lives?
The Rotary Youth Leadership Award is an international programme designed to develop
leadership skills in young people. RYLA participants attend a week long workshop, focussing
on leadership and personal development. The programme is organised and run by Rotarians
who are successful business and professional people themselves.
District 9930’s RYLA programme is open to any young people in our district who have left
secondary school. They can be tertiary students, farmers, teachers, electricians, and shop
assistants … young people who show, through their actions, that they are emerging leaders.
RYLA is not a programme to “sort out” wayward young people – it is to develop
leadership skills and build support networks for focussed and enthusiastic young leaders.
CANDIDATES SHOULD BE INTERVIEWED BY ROTARIANS FROM THE SPONSORING
CLUB to determine their suitability for RYLA and that they are prepared to commit to this
week-long, intensive development programme.
Sponsoring a young person on RYLA offers your club the chance to develop a special
relationship with young people in your community- in fact three of the participants came back
from RYLA 2017 and joined their sponsoring club as a member. RYLA offers the awardees
an outstanding opportunity to grow as a leader in a week filled with challenge, new learning,
teamwork and fun. The week long programme has been professionally designed to cover the
many aspects of leadership, and is based on a well-respected Leadership model.
Leadership skills are developed through introducing new learning, meeting people who are
living it, and giving it a go yourself. There’s a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, some at
the camp and others off site.
Next year’s programme will be run in April at Epworth Lodge, Karapiro from April 13th – 18th
and applications are open now for places on the programme. RYLA participants contribute
$100.00 to the club and the club pays the total fee of $850.00 ($750 from the club and $100
from the awardee). This fee covers accommodation, food (including the formal dinner)
facilitator fees where necessary, and all off site activities and buses for the week.
Enrolment forms for RYLA are available on the Rotary website. We also have compiled a
presentation to introduce you to (or remind you) what RYLA is and to encourage you to
approach young people in your community to sponsor them as next year’s RYLA awardees.

We’d like to see every club sponsor a RYLA awardee and give a young person in your
community the chance to take part in this leadership development programme. Many clubs
are now committing to sending two participants and some firms are finding RYLA offers
incredible personal professional development at a very reasonable cost. If you are sending
more than one applicant, please give some thought to gender balance – we’ve had twice as
many female participants as male in the last two years! We encourage you to select a
participant as a soon as possible so that they can receive timely information about the
