President's Message

I am really looking forward to our EndPolioNow fundraising event this coming Thursday, 15 October of the screening of “I am Woman” – the story of Helen Reddy who sadly passed away very recently.  Please advise either Ken Leatham or Greg Gascoigne of your intention to attend.
I am also excited about our first service project (and fundraiser) project for the 2020/21 year – the Spring Challenge on 17th which will show Rotary working in the community as well as bringing in some dollars. Thank you to those who have volunteered for marshalling.

Let’s all remember – this is a time of change. As we experience the after affects of COVID-19 and lockdown resulting in our normal activities being disrupted, we need to keep uppermost in our minds our vision – “Enjoy, energise and engage ---- and remember - The secret of change is to use all of your energy not in fighting the old but on building the new".

Next Meeting 15th October 2020

The film premiere “I am Woman” will replace the regular meeting next Thursday, 6.30 pm for 7.30pm. Polio Plus will receive the profit from the evening, so a strong attendance (target 140) will benefit a most worthwhile Rotary cause. Members of the Matamata Club will be joining us for the evening.

Cost $45 per head ($25 for the movie and $20 for the finger food supper).

Movie: I Am Woman

            Helen Reddy's story

Venue:  Tivoli Theatre - 6:30pm for 7:30pm start

THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

Welcome

As noted by acting sergeant David Blewden, it was an excellent turn out for a Committee discussion group meeting.

It was good to see a range of visitors – ladies from the Days for Girls sewing group (Anne Blewden, Deb Robinson, Sue Bullick, Margot Calder), John Stephenson (guest of Bev Maul-Rogers), Sean Brady (guest of Ray Milner and a potential new member). Also a welcome back to Silvio (still on crutches) and “Waiheke” Tom Pickering.

Directors then convened discussion groups of the various committees.

Days for Girls

President Bev welcomed the Days for Girls ladies

Led by Anne, with Deb and Sue in support, the ladies gave a detailed background of the group and its objectives in providing re-usable sanitary hygiene packages to girls and women in third world countries to enable them to participate fully in their communities without losing time in their menstrual cycles – to quote Anne “giving them back their days”.

The group has grown from humble beginnings to now number 30 and has now completed 4,536 shields and more than 500 liners.

Members were given a run down on the various contents of the packages.

The programme has been impacted by Covid, effectively suspending overseas despatch of packages, but work is continuing. Anne acknowledged the support received locally from our Club and the Rotary Club of Matamata.

With typical male insights, Brian Palmer thanked the ladies for their informative presentation.

Notices

David Partis spoke to the Spring Challenge race for women to be held on 17 October. The Club has been allocated 9 positions (that will generate more than $1,100  in Club revenue) in two locations -  Oreipunga Road and Sanctuary Mountain. Members willing to share the 7 hour shifts to please contact David or Maurie.

The Matakana Weekend excursion is now scheduled for 19 to 21 March 2021 – any additional would-be participants to contact Don Wilson ASAP.

The Bookarama duty roster sheets were circulated – this is a major fund raiser for the Club, but is highly labour intensive– support from all members is essential.

The visit to Glasslines is on 29 October (4.30 pm for 4.45pm). Tours for small groups of 20 – 30 minutes will be followed by dinner at Te Awa at 6.00 pm - $35 per head with a cash bar.

A Rotary information session for new Rotarians and new Club members organised by John Bullick was scheduled for after the meeting close – a great initiative.

The background to the Cambridge High School Educational Trust to (and the various awards made to students) was the topic of Andrew Bateman’s Did You Know.

Raffles were won by John Windle and Doug Lang.

President Bev reminded members that the venue for the meeting on 22 October at which DG Grant Spackmann will be in attendance will be the Moxon Centre.

She closed the meeting early at 7.50 pm.
