Virtual meeting via Zoom, Thursday 9 April, 5.00pm
About 25 members joined the meeting via Zoom, hosted by Bill Robinson. We welcomed Gretchen Bosaker and David Partis, prospective members. Unfortunately President Robyn and Chris had difficulty connecting due to some internet problems so Bill ran the “meeting”. Rotary has subscribed to Pro-Zoom which means we are not limited to a 40-minute meeting and can finish “in style” rather than being “cut off”.
Message from President Robyn
Yes our internet was down - not sure why maybe a surge in use between 4 - 6pm around the neighbourhood. So sorry not being able to join in and see all your smiley faces!
I just wanted to welcome the new potential members, Gretchen & David to the meeting. Alan van Nierkerk couldn’t make the meeting but will join next week’s meeting.
Also to wish everyone a happy, safe Easter at home. Something that is unusual for many of us is to be at home for Easter but at least the weather is great and, as far as we know, we are all well. The thing we’re noticing the most when out walking is how friendly everyone is, saying hello and having little chats. Keeping up with family through FaceTime and contacting friends via messenger and Zoom. We had our first Zoom party last Saturday that lasted 2 1/2hrs!
Keeping in touch with other Rotary members has been really important. The Zoom meetings have been really great (apart from when you can’t connect - a bit like the car breaking down and not being able to get the AA in time to fix it!). There’s still work going on in the background with Board discussions on various issues, the PR committee group emails and planning for the what if’s in the near future.
Neighbourhood Support has thanked the club for members who have volunteered to be buddies in the community. We have also been sent some great links for exercising from Steph McLennan who came to talk to us a few weeks back (see below). Also attached is their newsletter.
Mostly seated & gentle: At home exercise videos
Mostly standing & active: At home exercise videos
Don’t forget we have Mayor Jim Mylchreest joining our meeting next week.
Enjoy your Easter eggs and hot cross buns, keep well and positive. See you all next week. Pres Robyn

Update – by Gretchen Bosaker
Some members comments they shared at our Thursday “meeting”
- Waipa District Council is continuing to meet via Zoom and Roger Gordon says they’re going well. There will be a real challenge in setting the rates this year. He is enjoying having his daughter staying with them plus their granddaughter – Roger hasn’t tried changing nappies yet!!
- Jan Bilton is working from home as usual. Missing being able to go out driving with Michael.
- David Partis is welcoming time at home as having recently shifted provides an opportunity to unpack boxes. His web development occupation is continuing as usual from home
- Don Harris has seen the work at his business dry up during the lockdown
- Bill MacMillan – he is walking within Te Awa Village and enjoying seeing the new development
- Nigel Salter – celebrated Christine’s birthday – may have to recycle something as a present!
- John Tarbutt – celebrated 40 years of marriage (Congratulations John and Linda). Busy in his role as President of Achievement House

News from our two outbound exchange students in France:
Hello Greg,
Quarantine is dragging on a bit, I won't lie, and I think other french people are feeling the same. There are more people on the streets, and less masks are being worn, which probably isn't a good sign, but the weather is just so beautiful. I'm going pretty well, still laughing with my family, and I'm set to move in a couple of weeks, so will see how that goes.
I hadn't thought about what this must be like for farmers! Do you find in a bit more difficult to do business now is it easier to get around now that the roads are empty? Good luck to all the share milkers, hopefully the quarantine will be pretty much over by then... But who knows? Glad you are doing well, it's nice to know that nz is keeping it's head up.
So far as the confinement progresses, I have been becoming more inventive with my time. For example, for the past three days I have been trying to tame a neighbouring pigeon with bread. So far I am unsuccessful. I am beginning to think it is laughing at me. But as rotary has told me, determination to succeed will be vital in this exchange year, so I am undeterred. Will keep you updated if this situation progresses.
Sincerely
Sarah
Hi Greg,
Things are going well here while there have been a few ups and downs it has been mostly pretty good. It is school holidays at the moment and my host dad and I share a birthday so we are going to be celebrating together on the 9th. It has been hard with a lot of my friends returning to their home countries but I think that I and the right choice to stay. There have been a few things that have been less than ideal such as the situation with my host family and rotary and me breaking my phone but other than that the weather has been amazing and my French has really started to improve.
I hope everyone in NZ is keeping themselves safe.
Kind regards
Zara
