Bulletin 30/04/20
Posted by Bev Maul-Rogers
Virtual meeting via Zoom, Thursday 30 April, 5.00pm
President Robyn welcomed all members, plus Assistant Governor – David Hulme, prospective member – David Partis, partners of members and guest speaker Kelvin Eglinton.
Guest Speaker – Kelvyn Eglinton – CEO Momentum Waikato
Introduction of the guest speaker was in the hands of Andrew Bateman.
Kelvyn thanked Rotary for the invitation to speak. He has been back in New Zealand since 2016 and prior to that spent time overseas including in Jakarta and West Australia where he worked in mining. He has also worked in the local government sector.
Momentum Waikato is a foundation that manages funds received through bequests and philanthropic donations to support community organisations and are the perpetual guardians of the monies received. They work with donors to fund various projects that benefit the community and carry out the wishes of those who have made donations eg conservation projects such as Taitua Arboretum. Momentum works with various organisations such as the Waikato Regional Theatre, Waikato DHB and projects around affordable housing. The interest from funds invested is assigned to projects and sometimes capital is used.
An appeal has been set up to raise funds in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. People can donate via the website to help get food and winter essentials for Waikato’s most vulnerable during and after the pandemic. Grants are given to frontline organisations. So far $63,000 has been raised.
President Robyn thanked Kelvyn for his presentation and congratulated him on the work of Momentum Waikato.
NOTICES
Firewood delivery
Ken Leatham provided an update. Not a lot of firewood is left but we should be able to honour current orders. Ken will advise about organising a further working bee in the future.
Suggestion – community get together under Level 1 or 2
Ken Leatham suggested that the club could organise a community get together under an appropriate Alert Level. This would give Rotary a profile, stimulate the local community and support “local”. It was suggested that a plan be put together so that the project could proceed at the time this is allowed. Feedback was sought on this suggestion – either to Ken or President Robyn.
Taste Waikato promotion
As reported last bulletin, the Board supported the proposal for Jan Bilton to go ahead with a further Taste Waikato promotion in time for Mother’s Day. The promotion will be done via social media and the website. Every purchaser will go into a draw to win a food hamper worth over $100. Books will be posted to avoid physical contact. Members were asked to share the Taste Waikato Facebook post with their own FB friends. Anyone who has trouble with the process can talk with LesleyAnn who will be happy to help.

Salvation Army Food Bank collection – contributions of unperishable food
President Robyn has been reading that the Salvation Army is running very short on supplies for their Food Banks and suggests that members may like to contribute an item of unperishable food to the collection boxes when they go to the supermarket. Collection boxes are stationed at Countdown and Fresh Choice. People can also go online on

This is one way we can make a difference to families in need at this particular time and help our community.

President Robyn received an email from District Governor Peter Maxwell who had been approached by Hospice Waikato for help. As you know their shops have been shut down for the last few weeks. They are now looking ahead to their re-opening and they need help with sorting stock, moving furniture, washing bric-a-brac, hanging clothing, dusting etc.
The Board OK’d this request to be sent out to Rotarians, on the same basis as an earlier request from Neighbourhood Support that anyone who would like to help make contact as an individual. Please be aware that social distancing and other health measures will be required.

‘Here to help u’ is ready to support anyone and everyone Immediate aid to the vulnerable, delivered in a way that builds a stronger society after the crisis, is the focus of the COVID-19 relief effort coordinated by the Waikato’s lead social and community service providers and supported by Momentum Waikato and other major local funders. ‘Here to help u through COVID-19’ is a new online community support tool and network centered around a website, www.heretohelpu.nz, where any member of the public can quietly ask for help, and individuals, families, businesses and organisations can securely and easily target their offers of assistance. It is the ‘front counter’ for a wide and coordinated support effort that aims to ensure anyone suffering hardship during the COVID-19 lockdown and beyond can easily request and get the help they need, regardless of their walk of life. |
