Highlights: - The program was conceived as part of the recognition of the 100th anniversary of Rotary International in NZ
- The program is to be delivered in partnership with UNICEF.
- The initial goal is to protect 100,000 children from rotavirus, pneumococcal disease and cervical cancer, across nine Pacific Island Countries: Nauru, Tuvalu, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands, Kiribati and Tokelau over three years:
- HPV vaccine for girls to prevent cervical cancer in later life
- Rotavirus and pneumococcal vaccines for all children to reduce illness and deaths from gastroenteritis, pneumonias, meningitis and bacteraemia
- This will then be continued by the strengthened immunisation programs in each country so that these vaccines will continue to be delivered to future generations of children.
- The role of Rotary will be to fund some regional and other supporting activities in the 4 counties where the basic funding will be provided by the Asian Development Bank, and to fully fund programs in the other 5 countries independently of ADB.
- Target: Michelle identified the target as being for each Club in the District to donate $45 per member – she noted that every $45 donation will protect one child from rotavirus, pneumococcal disease and cervical cancer.

- Letter from Zara
Things are going well here, I have been with my new host family for over a month now and I have settled in to my new district. My host mum has been helping me with my French and I have seen a massive improvement since I moved. I have also started doing some embroidery with my host sister. I have met a rotary exchange student from Australia in my town and she has been showing me around and helping me get used to Montpellier. I was sad to leave my old district without being able to see any of the other exchange students but although most of them have gone home already, one of them will be coming to visit me before she goes back to the the US. At the moment it is the school holidays and tomorrow we will be going to the Pyrenees for a week. I am really excited for this as I haven’t really been able to do much travelling since I arrived. Also here’s the link to my French blog I have started if you want to see what I have been up to. I hope everything is going well with you in New Zealand. Roger Gordon asked for volunteers for the PR Committee – preferably with Facebook expertise. He distributed the “Rotary Cambridge” brochure, and urged members to use it for recruiting new members.
Dinner Sergeant Sergeant John Bishop denuded wallets/purses in a lively session. Wine winner was Richard Johnston, who graciously (and repeatedly) returned the 2nd bottle to the draw, until finally won by Ken Leatham. Did You Know....? Gretchen Bousaker provided a highly entertaining summary of some of the interesting facts and data regarding the human body and its ailments. Days for Girls Our ladies meet monthly on a Wednesday afternoon and also the next Thursday night. This week their District co-ordinator Lissette Hulme and her mother came over from Matamata to show the ladies another part of the process to be sewn. Close President Bev thanked guest speaker Michelle Tanner and all members for their attendance, and closed the meeting at 7.45 pm. |
