Club meeting 25/07/19Welcome |
Welcome The President welcomed visitor Mark Watts who is on his second visit. Guest speaker Bill Wilson introduced David Galbraith a former golfer who is involved with super rugby (Sports psychologist) David spoke on the needs of coaches and parents to have the right attitude towards the children and players in their care. He himself raised his girls to be good people. He believes that parents should make the trip to sports exciting along with the trip home. Don’t point the finger but encourage the participants to identify what needs further attention. David spoke about courage, leading by example, integrity and self examination. Great coaches live well with integrity and courage. He talked about the rattle affect when pushed to the limits and that 75% of top sports people live with the rattle. "Don't be a coward" Teach children to have courage, accept challenges and work hard. David gave many examples to explain his point of view and was a most entertaining and worthy guest speaker’ | | Projects The projects that were voted on to do for a Service Project in order of popularity are: - A bus shelter opposite the I Site. Presently there is no shelter for passengers (It was pointed out that the bus service & shelters are managed by Waikato Regional Council and the reason there may not be a bus shelter could be because the route may be going to be changed. More investigation needs to be done on this).
- Terrace the bank of the Square opposite Town clock and plant with shrubs, etc. (Council will need to be contacted to find out if this is already in their District Plan & whether there is an opportunity for Rotary to carry out development. Possibility of doing 1 & 2 together as a whole project or 2 & 3 if the bus shelter idea is not viable).
- In association with the terracing of the bank above: looking at some kind of renovation/walkway at the top of the Jubilee Steps, as you approach the Farmer’s Market. The area is always muddy and no grass grows under the trees. The area is not part of the Square that would affect cricket but would improve access to the market
- Commission a public artwork
All ideas will need a project lead, costs and budget for application of a District Grant. The Sir Edmond Hillary Challenge team from Cambridge High School catered for us. A donation of $720 was given to them for their efforts. Notices - Thanks to everyone for helping last week with the medical emergency. Particularly Elaine Ruis, Bill Robinson for contacting emergency services & Carey for assisting, John Bishop & Chris for assessing Billy’s condition & speaking with emergency services. Questions: where is the defibrillator kept here? Who has had defibrillator training? Who would like to have training? Where is the emergency alarm in the building?
A course for all members is to be investigated - Roger Hill has been honoured with a prestigious International Science award – the J Brenton Jones Jr award at the 16th International symposium on Soil & Plant Analysis held in Wageningen, Netherlands. The award is given in recognition of an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the scientific profession of soil & plant analysis. Over the last 30 years this unique award has been presented to 15 individuals across 8 countries. So a huge congratulations to Roger for achieving this exceptional honour!
- Bill Wilson reported that he is fit and well
