THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

Bulletin notes - Club meeting 20/06/19

Welcome

Four HPNZ athletes from Canoe Racing New Zealand Men’s team were welcomed to the meeting by President Ray.  They were Max Brown, Hamish Legarth, Ashton Reiser and Benjamin Duffy.  Also welcomed was Silvio Ribeiro as well as Nigel Salter a visitor from the Rotary Club of Tully, North Queensland.

HPNZ Canoe Racing New Zealand Men’s team – journey to World Cups in Poland, Germany, Romania and France

Four of the five members of the Canoe Racing NZ Men’s team were present and spoke of their backgrounds, how they became involved in canoe racing and the journey since the beginning.

First to speak was the oldest of the group – Max Brown.  Max said he was familiar with Rotary as both his father and grandfather were Rotarians.  He spoke about the importance of resilience to face and master the challenges to achieve in a competitive sport.  Max had had 10 years of paddling, starting at about 14.  Outside of his sport, his professional life was in the world of music performance.  He gained a Bachelor of Music majoring in jazz performance and said the time when he was canoe training and studying was stressful and he was pushed to the limits. He now teaches guitar at Cambridge East Primary School. Unfortunately at 21 he slipped a disc and took two years to recover but he avoided surgery.  Having just made the A-finals, he said the six campaigns to reach this goal and trying to qualify for the Olympics had been a long and frustrating journey.

Hamish Legarth originated from the Hawkes Bay and has been involved in all different types of sport.  He was first keen to play cricket but after losing a finger in an accident that was ruled out so he took up kayaking and canoe polo. He studied for a Bachelor of (Civil) Engineering at Waikato University and joined the Men’s Sprint Kayaking team.  He has had a series of injuries and kept on dislocating his shoulder.

Ashton Reiser from Auckland spent a number of years as a surf lifesaver at Mairangi Bay. His canoe training was first at Lake Pupuke on the North Shore but finds Karapiro more beneficial to race training. As well as his high performance training, Ashton studies biology at university.  To overcome challenges he said you need to have respect, accountability and courage as well as being self-sufficient.  Ashton said that the Cambridge community is always very supportive of the high performance teams.

Notice

In the absence of a “Magic Moment” ……… our “stand-in” Sergeant - John Bishop “interviewed” Rotarian Nigel Salter of Tully

Nigel originates from South Africa where he grew up in Durbin. He graduated as a Chartered Accountant in 1973 and left South Africa for Australia in 1974. Now retired, he held a senior position with the Tully Sugar Mill.  Tully in North Queensland has been recorded as having the highest rainfall and sports a Giant Gumboot (but no gumboot throwing competitions!). He visits Cambridge periodically as his daughter who is an engineer lives here. He confesses to now being a Wallabies and Reds fan!!!

Counsellors - outgoing Youth Exchange Students
Thanks to Shona Devoy and Julie Bryan for agreeing to be counsellors, as well as Deb Robinson as a “reserve”.

Matching Grants
Opportunities for matching grants available.  Members are encouraged to see Doug Lang if they have ideas for a community project for which the club could apply.  Every idea will be considered. The Rotary Foundation will match the money contributed by our club. The Club needs lots of ideas.  Applications close 31 July.

Rotary Club of Cambridge – changeover - will be held on Thursday, 27 June. Partners welcome. Confirmation of attendance and extras for the changeover is required by Sunday 23 June.

Rotary Cambridge – grants round
The Board has approved the recommendations of the Grants Team for the 2018/19 round.  The grants allocated were explained by President Ray.  At this stage they are to be kept confidential but the list will be circulated to club members once the applicants have been advised. The list will be publicly notified also.

District Changeover – 30 June – RSVPs closed on Sunday 16 June.

Rotary Branded Clothing

The club is looking to collate together a bulk order from Rotary Down Under in Melbourne for members wishing to purchase Rotary Branded Clothing.  The Board has also decided to include the name Cambridge on the branding as well.  (This incurs an additional $10 cost).

The items selected from the RDU website are shown below, with the cost to our members, i.e. the Cambridge branding included.

Please advise Roger Hill by email (roger.hill@hill-labs.co.nz) of which items you require and the size.  A clipboard with these options is also being passed around on club night.

Content for Bulletin

Please send any content for bulletins to Don Wilson no later than the Friday night to ensure it is included.
