President Robyn welcomed back from holiday – Roger Hill, Richard Johnstone, Kim Prichard, Carey Church and John Bishop. She also welcomed Silvio Ribeiro.
Guest Speaker: Richard Calvert – Asure Quality and Mycoplasma bovis
In introducing guest speaker - Richard Calvert of Asure Quality, Greg Gascoigne said that the farming industry relies on “these guys to keep the bad stuff out”.
Richard has had wide experience in the biosecurity and agricultural industry. He has worked at Hamilton Airport and at Ruakura. He now works for Asure Quality. Asure is contracted by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) to deal with such occurrences as the Gypsy Moth infestation and several infestations of Fruit Fly. More recently the company has been contracted to handle the devastating Mycoplasmas bovis outbreak. Most work initially was in the South Island. Richard said there is no proof how MBovis came into the country.
Asure is contracted to do operational work. Surveillance is done through a series of tests – which may not show a result – very frustrating for the farmers in particular. The whole management situation is extremely difficult – balancing the impact of hard decisions on the farmers while maintaining a relationship with them. Basically, Asure and MPI have a mandate to protect the wider interest. Richard said they believe they’re gaining on the outbreak but progress is difficult. In the area of control 130 farms have been de-populated, cleaned and disinfected and currently 260 people nationwide are employed. He emphasised the process was very emotive for farmers who feel totally disempowered but some sharemilkers and farmers have come back onto the land and started afresh. The outbreak and consequences has resulted in huge cost but bona fide loss and cost will be compensated.

Matching Grants
President Robyn asked those present to each write down on the “post-it” notes on the tables a suggestion for a matching grant. The notes will be collected and ideas considered. Applications for matching grants close 31 August.
INTERACT fundraising
A well patronized film fundraiser had been held the previous evening at the Tivoli and organized by INTERACT. The film “Yesterday” was a good choice and thoroughly enjoyable. All but four tickets were sold and $600 was raised for the Cambridge Lifeskills Trust. Jan Bilton was the lucky Raffle winner with the prize generously sponsored by Fresh Choice. Thanks to the Cambridge High School INTERACT students and to Andy Newman for being the Rotary liaison person.
Garden Festival – Volunteers
Carey Church called for volunteers for the welcoming slots at the Garden Festival on Sunday 24 November. She passed around a roster for people to indicate when they could commit. If there were people Rotarians knew who could also help then Carey would be pleased for this to be written down.
Publicity Team
President Robyn reported that the first meeting of the Publicity Team led by Roger Gordon had been held the previous evening. They had discussed and identified areas of focus aligned to the Work Plan.
Rotary Branded Clothing
Roger Hill said he is keen to close off the orders for Rotary Branded Clothing in a week or two. If you have missed filling in the order form please let Roger know which clothing items you would like and the size. Members need to let Roger know if you approve your account being charged for the cost. By wearing Rotary branded clothing when we are participating in a project is important to identify us as Rotarians and that we’re out there working for the community.
Raffle Winner
Bruce Hancock was the lucky winner this week – and the bulletin note-taker can’t remember who was second!!!
Club meetings – Head Table for this year
A reminder that sitting at the Head Table will be President Robyn, the speaker, the sergeant, the introducer, the thanker and one guest member (to be decided by the sergeant).

Rotary Basics is now an online course that covers all things Rotary in an interactive, multimedia format.
In this new Learning Centre course, you can deepen your understanding of Rotary as well as meet members around the world and watch videos. You can also take a quiz to test your Rotary knowledge.
The Rotary Basics online course was designed for new members, but it is also a good refresher for long-time members who want to test their Rotary knowledge or even nonmembers who simply want to know what Rotary is all about.
We’d encourage club leaders to include this course in new member orientation programs or recommend it to members as they take on new leadership positions
Thanks to you all for your patience with the time taken to get this organised. Attached below is an XL spreadsheet showing what has been requested by the club membership. Can you please check that we have your details correct, especially the size to be ordered. We intend to place the order early next week.
Please advise by email to roger.hill@hill-labs.co.nz how you would like to pay. You can either pay the club directly (Treasurer, Bev Heron) or it can be added to your regular monthly invoice. If we dont hear from you, then we will assume the latter is your preference.
Regards, Roger Hill
