THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

Bulletin notes - Club meeting 27/06/19

Welcome

Richard Seabrook, deputising as Sergeant for the evening welcomed a large attendance of Rotarians, partners and guests to the annual changeover of officers and directors.  Among the guests in attendance were Mayor Jim Mylchreest and Mayoress Robyn, DGE Peter Maxwell and AG Area 3 David Hulme and Lisette.  Richard invited President Ray to reflect on his year leading the club.

In his year, with the international theme being “Be the Inspiration”, President Ray said there had been many inspirational moments with some amazing speakers bringing their stories of achievement in the face of adversity.  Particularly motivational were accounts of the journeys that our sports people had encountered including the paralympians.  The club had contributed considerably throughout the year to help many people achieve and to assist those with disabilities to live a better and more fulfilling life. Of significance was the donation made by Rotary Clubs throughout New Zealand, including Cambridge to the victims of the Christchurch terrorist attack.  Ray acknowledged the inspiration brought by new members in the projects they lead and those in which they were involved and also the personal stories and challenges members had shared in the Magic Moments sessions. Ray thanked outgoing directors and office holders for their hard work and support during the year.

Those present were entertained by Rotary’s own band the Bruised Brothers and all enjoyed a meal before the induction of incoming President – Robyn Crickett.

It is appropriate and exciting that Rotary Cambridge is welcoming a woman leader this year, as 2019 marks the 30th year Rotary International has officially welcomed women as members.

In accepting the chain of office Robyn thanked Ray and his team for the year’s work and the support she as President-Elect had received. Her team of directors and office bearers were introduced and presented with a theme pin. The new international theme for the year is “Rotary Connects the World”.

In her opening address, Robyn said ‘In order to make a difference in the world, we need to make things better at home. What I am hearing is that Rotary needs to be more up to date, more relevant. We need to connect better and create an environment in our club that is attractive to a greater diversity of people – diversity of age, gender and ethnicity. Next week at our first club meeting for the 2019-20 year I will be outlining strategies for the year ahead, some of which will be proposing some changes for the club. In the words of John F. Kennedy, past USA President, ‘Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future’.”

Robyn says she is looking forward to working with members of the Cambridge Rotary club who share an equal purpose - making an impact within the Cambridge community.

Notice

Opportunities for matching grants available.  Members are encouraged to see Doug Lang if they have ideas for a community project for which the club could apply.  Every idea will be considered. The Rotary Foundation will match the money contributed by our club. The Club needs lots of ideas.  Applications close 31 July.

Resignation – Julie Bryan
The Board received with sincere regret the resignation of Julie Bryan.  In her letter of resignation, Julie says:

“I am grateful to have been a member for these past (I think) 6 years. Everyone has been great to know and I look forward to recognising the familiar faces in the street going forward. The group does so much for the community and it is very successful and I have really enjoyed my time belonging.”

New Members
The Board has approved two new members to join Rotary Cambridge – Jono Gibson and Silvio Ribeiro. They will be inducted as Rotarians at a meeting in July.  We look forward to their involvement in various projects and getting to know them.

Movie Night

Interact club has arranged  a movie to be screened on the 10th of July.  The screening is at 8pm, however, there is a raffle and an auction earlier, so people are encouraged turn up for 7.30pm.  Movie tickets are $20 and this includes a raffle ticket.

Proceeds for the night will be donated to Cambridge Lifeskills Trust.
A very worthy cause.
