THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

Club Meeting 10th October 2019

Welcome

Club’s first informal meeting
President Robyn welcomed everyone to the first of the informal meetings of the club – or as she called it “Casual Rotary”.

Guest Speaker – Henry, St John – defibrillator demonstration and training
Andrew Bateman introduced Henry from St John. This was a great opportunity for us all to become familiar with how to use a defribrillator (AED).  There are 17 lockboxes that house a defibrillator in Cambridge.  Henry explained the workings and content of the lockbox and said that there was no place in town where a lockbox was more than a kilometre away. People can download an AED app which shows locations.

Henry then demonstrated how to operate the defibrillator.  We noted that the AED talks you through the procedure once it is turned on. The purpose of using the device is to get blood to the brain.  Some things were noted
  • don’t be afraid to try
  • always dial 111 for the combination to the lockbox
  • lifting the head slightly before commencing is crucial
  • check the breathing – if no breathing use the defibrillator and apply CPR
  • don’t be afraid of breaking rib cartilage
  • be careful with babies
  • purpose is to get blood to the brain
Well done Carey Church, Mark Hanlon and President Robyn for volunteering to “have a go”, and thank you Henry for the demonstration.

Notices

Garden Festival – volunteers needed to distribute flyers and posters
Carey Church is looking for additional volunteers for the delivery of flyers and posters on the “Findit” routes and to business.  The business distribution is both in the Cambridge area and other towns.  John Bullick is putting up street signs at Labour Weekend – anyone who can help please contact Carey or John.

Movie night fundraiser – World Polio Day – 24 October
We have been able to secure a movie on its New Zealand Premiere night at the Tivoli Cambridge. The movie is "Ride Like A Girl" and is the story of the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. She was the youngest of 11 children whose mother died when she was just 6 months old. Her father, played by Sam Neill, was a horse trainer but managed to raise the family on his own. You will find the story quite emotional. So, bring your friends along and have a great night out.

The movie will start at 8pm, but we will have the use of the private lounge downstairs for drinks beforehand. This is a highly recommended movie, and you will be supporting PolioPlus at the same time.

There will no Rotary meeting that week.

Firewood project
Ken Leatham advised that 6 loads of firewood had been delivered to Tamahere.  There is still more to be sold and Ken asked people to promote the firewood availability amongst friends, neighbours etc. In addition more work needs to be done to split logs.  Please see Ken if you can help or know of potential buyers.

Bookarama – 2020 – 3-10 May
Please note – books are not yet able to be left at Achievement House as they currently do not have enough room – so no books are to be taken there until December.

Raffle Winners
Raffle winners this week were Bev Maul-Rogers and Maurice Marshment.

Metals Recovery Project – presentation next Club meeting – 17 October
The Board has been presented with a very comprehensive report on the Metals Recovery Project which has been proposed by Mark Hanlon and David Blewden. Considerable research has been undertaken over the past year and numerous other similar organisations have been visited to gain a better understanding of the risks and opportunities inherent in running a resource recovery centre.  Also investigated were the potential markets for the recovered materials

As a result of the report and a presentation by Mark and David this week, the Board has approved the project under the scenario proposed, subject to a presentation to the club and the acceptance by club members.

Mark and David and other committee members will make their presentation at next Thursday’s club meeting 17 October.  Please make every attempt to be present to learn about the project, ask questions and be part of the decision making process.

This presentation replaces the speaker previously advised who will attend a meeting at a later date.

Water as an instrument for peace
The Aral Sea in Central Asia was once the fourth largest lake in the world. But water management policies of the past have left it severely depleted. The countries that surround the Aral Sea basin all depend on the same sources for their water. The actions of one impact others, creating conflict. Rotary District 5340 is using a global grant to fund seven scholars from the region to take part in the Water Cooperation and Diplomacy program, where they are learning valuable lessons about water as an instrument for peace. Read a blog post from one of the scholars on Rotary Voices.
